I know there are:

- MSX Basic
- MSX DOS 1, 2 (and some variations)
- SymbOS (is there any source for this one, cannot find it)
- Uzix (is there any source for v2, cannot find it)
- Breeze

Any more? With sources? Any dev still going on or people moved to games only for MSX/Z80?

What about SWORD? Was that the name? Could we consider it to be an OS?

On MSX OS it kind of different than what we use these days... I guess. Things you start from MS(X)-DOS I would not call an OS unless they overwrite their 'loader' completely in memory and take over it's services. But Win3.1/95 was also considered an OS (not by me though) while it ran on DOS.

But the more the better, I'm esp searching for something with an actual source. I would really like to find the uzix 2 source as that seems to be very easy to understand, but the creator is no longer reachable (at least not that I can find).

MSX-DOS is an operating system. The clue is in the name DOS=Disk Operating System. I think you are getting OS mixed with GUI as Win3.1/95 is a GUI OS.

@Buleste, you didn't read what I wrote. MS(X)-DOS are OSs, but stuff you run on top (Ease, HomeOffice) are not. That's what I said.

And you can argue if win3.1/95 are actually OSs:

"An operating system (OS) is a set of programs that manage computer hardware resources and provide common services for application software." (Wikipedia)

I'm not sure 3.1 did this without MS-DOS, so then MS-DOS would be the OS and 3.1 just a GUI, not an actual OS.

Anyway, I was not wanting to nitpick, let me put it somewhat clearer; looking for an OS that manages the hardware and exposes an API, so not something that runs ON TOP of MSX-DOS.

I agree with the Wiki quote. An OS is the service that runs the whole joint. The userinterface is actually a program using the Os services. But we can asume that most OS-es include a userinterface.

Ever heard of the MSX f-Kernel (aka Midas)?
you can find out more on http://www.thefuzz.nl/msx
(direct link for info: http://www.thefuzz.nl/msx/?file=thefuzz_midas)

Now, "breeze".. I dunno that one. any links?

No didn't know f-Kernel/Midas; thanks for the link, but no source again. You would think people would open source all their MSX stuff he Smile
