REAL MSX revival!

Hi to all,

I had a comeback in the MSX scene after 12 years of destroying my real creativity

as a programmer using the PCs!

Of course now that I am older (and wiser perhaps ) , I can view the MSX

in more than just one perspective...

I am currently involved in a MBA program (Masters in Business Administration)

finishing in June, yet my bachelors degree is software engineering.

I've got lots of ideas as far as New Product Development is concerned...

I think that we should carry out in-depth interviews as of what the MSX stands for

us, beyond a joyfull memory...

If this is ok with everyone, I could post a special questionnaire, and with the help of this site, we could have many MSXers write their opinions...

Maybe we could come up with many great ideas of what the MSX3 (or whatever is it's name) should be...

Whoever participates in this questionnaire should be free of pessimism/optimism and should never, under any circumstances, judge the ideas of others... This is the only way we, as true MSX users, will come up with the next generation of MSX...

Everybody has seen how the PC's are fading out... They have all become one of the following:

a. Communication tools.

b. Game consoles.

c. Java terminals.

d. Illegal machines to copy music and video

I do not think that this is the dream you had about how a good computer would be in the future...

I am waiting for your thoughts!

Great to see you this enthusiastic. And both MSX Association and ASCII read this forum on a very regular bases, so your idea is great, of course!!

I do must say one thing, though You could be too late. The MSX Revival has been going on since 1999 or so. Especially in the years 2000 and 2001 there have been extensive thoughts about the specifications regarding the 'MSX3' as you call it.

In the year 2001 Dr. Kazuhiko Nishi visited the MSX fair in Tilburg, The Netherlands, to give a speech about his thoughts....He is a visiting MIT professor. There in the USA, he does a lot of thinking and talking regarding this matter. For example, the United Nations play a large role in the next MSX ideas....

Add that all up in 1 device, plus developer-friendlyness (comes with basic, easy to program in every language, and open standards), and you've got my dream machine.

p.s. Music and video doesn't nessecarily have to be illegal. I for example collect and watch a lot of video files, but they're fansubs of anime series not licensed here in the Netherlands. Although technically spoken not entirely legal, in practice they are. Besides, I'm all for a society in which people are not so money-oriented as they currently are (people who program something and release it without asking heaps of money for it get the general idea ). I believe currently things are slowly developing towards that, because since the internet exists media cost is low, and I'm curious as for what the future will bring us.

It seems to me that all you want is a friendly and easy development tool for the PC...

this is not what I was thinking of, although I agree on the addition you have made...

But then again, as I said, discussing and criticising other's ideas leads to nowhere...

You frame your imagination to what PC's are today... Snap out of it, if you want to make the future...

Bill Gates, had lots of ideas during the years. Unfortunately, he implemented them poorly on the PC. But it seems that it is the ideas that can give you an advantage... If you notice his actions carefully, you would see that he constantly tries to be, creatively, one step ahead... He almost never looks back and does not actually care, if what he has made was good or bad... It would be copied by others sooner or later... The only thing that cannot be copied is innovation.

I personally believe that the new MSX should belong to the consumer electronics industry and not on the PC industry. My idea is that MSX should be a creativity machine with the most user-friendly development environment possible creating unlimited software for ALL other devices, PCs, Game Consoles, DVD players etc. It should be simple but unlimiting... You should be able to build everything from scratch.

Anyway... these are just thoughts...

Well, I agree with you. If the 'MSX3' wants to be a success, it shouldn't be built on the current concept of PC's.....It should have a fresh view on computing and indeed it should stimulate people's creativity, coz that's what has been lacking since the era of the homecomputers. We must bring that back....

Anyway, the 'MSX3' will be a cheap device, it will play a large role in bringing 3d world countries to a higher economical level....The success of the 'MSX3' won't be made in Europe, USA or Japan. The success of the 'MSX3' will be the most in developing countries. That is my prediction.

No, I don't want a PC. PC's are not easily programmed for, have lots of legacy limitations and compatibility issues, are not scalable, etcetera.

The MSX as it is is a multi-purpose machine aswell, just like the PC. However the difference lays for a large part in (open) standardization and ease of programming. That is what I would like to see in the new MSX aswell. Also the MSX has a high 'Japan'-factor, meaning that graphics and music, coolness, 'gadgetness' etc. are very important. A low price is a nice addition, and portability is simply cool.

I fully agree with this. Did I ever say otherwise? ;p Development is a very important factor to me, however it was not everything, it is not everything, and it will not be everything on such a diverse machine with great possibilities - oh, did I mention it needs to be commercially attractive aswell? ;p Anyways
