Of course, it's also possible, but it seems me that AxelF is more interested by emulators, at least when I read his message in this thread.

I do not quite understand the purpose of the IPS patch
does this remove the DRM from the original ROM,
so I can play it on a emulator ... or better on my real msx.
then you need the original rom I guess ?

The DRM is not in the original rom, but in the Woomb file (game + embedded MSX-PLAYer emulator + DRM encrypting that is different for each buyer/gamer).

The IPS patch will apply the translation (and eventually improvements) on the original Japanese rom.

Correct me if I'm wrong, but once you've patched your disk or rom, you should also be able to play it on your actual MSX.

Yes, you can play it on real MSX. For disk games it's easy, you can just use dcopy.exe and copy file on your actual floppy disk. Then use this disk in the actual MSX computer.

For ROM file, you will need FLASH cartridge like MegaFlashROM (http://www.msxcartridgeshop.com/) to make it work.

To patch games I prefer to use LunarIPS: http://www.zophar.net/utilities/patchutil/lunar-ips.html

From my experience it creates the most compact IPS patches compare to other tools. And usually IPS patch created with it absolutely identical to classic IPS patch utility: http://www.zophar.net/utilities/patchutil/ips.html
But classic IPS patcher do not work on 64bit Windows.

The WOOMB DRM was cracked years ago. In fact, within 24 hours of its launch. Everything is in the .sbn file.
If you know where to find them, there are tools that can anonymise the .sbn file and extract its contents.

Then you need the IPS patches from the MSX IPS Archive to play them on your real MSX, because the games were poorly hacked and without applying the IPS fixes only work properly on the built-in emulator.

Weird, as I have some ('jailbroken' but unpatched) WOOMB translations which work fine on emulators and on my real MSX. So I've always assumed that these IPS patches don't 'fix' anything apart from enabling the 'official' WOOMB releases to be played outside of the built-in emulator.

Strange assumption is strange. The patches have nothing to do with "enabling" that.

You may not run into problems with every MSX configuration, or you may not have run into problems in the particular part of the particular game you have played, but the patches on the MSX IPS Archive exist purely for fixing compatibility problems and (visual) glitches due to bad hacking.

Try playing Woomb Xak on a turboR and see how good it works, for example...
Or enjoy the glitches in the Golvellius end demo because of Rieks' vanity...

Could be. As I said, I didn't have any problems with the translations. Apart from that, I fail to see the connection between a glitchy enddemo and vanity, but I'll just let you have your fun.

Why so condescending?

Rieks added his own name to the staff scroll, overwriting game data, causing glitches in the end demo.

Simple cause and effect...

I take it from your reactions (including the one you deleted) that accurate info is not appreciated on this site.

GuyverR800, Where Riek's adding his name into the credits essentially made a glitch happen during the End Demo may be accurate or not, I think the way you stated it with the word "vanity" is what turns a statement like the one you mentioned from being objective into something subjective or biased.

I must admit that when I originally read it too, my reaction was that of John's above in that it showed disrespect towards Rieks (being vain and including his name, which wasn't even mentioned or clarified until your post just now, just stated as a fact of the matter). It's common practice for fan-translators to want to include their name in the credits for translating/localizing a piece of software. Actually, there are not that many fan-translated games that I can remember where the translator's name was not inserted somewhere in the game whether it be on the title screen or during the end credits.

Anyhow, not trying to troll or anything, but I did want to point out that sharing an opinion and sharing accuracy are a bit different. You might have said something like "It's too bad Rieks made the End Demo glitched with the insertion of his name there..."

Aside from all that, I wanted to say thank you to Rieks and Max Iwamoto for releasing these WOOMB games again! : )
