#004 | Alisia Dragoon

Developer: Game Arts
Year: 1992
Platform(s): Sega Mega Drive/Genesis

Soundtrack composed by: Mecano Associates (Nobuyuki Aoshima, Mamoru Ishimoda, Yoko Sonoda, Mariko Sato, Fumihito Kasatani)

This underrated and relatively unknown little gem is by none other than the creators of Thexder and Fire Hawk. It shows in the gameplay, as it shares the 'homing laser' system of those titles, but that's where the similarities stop.
I always remembered seeing this game as a kid in the gaming magazines and being fascinated, but I never owned a Mega Drive or knew someone who did and had the game.
Years and years later, through the wonders of emulation, I finally got acquainted with it, and on short notice, this game became one of my favorites ever, and so did its soundtrack (which sometimes clearly shows its relation to the Fire Hawk soundtrack).
Interesting to note is that this soundtrack features not one, but at least two hints at the music of the first few Rocky movies.
My favorite tracks are Stage 1-1, Stage 2, Stage 4, Boss Theme 2 and Final Boss 2.

About Alisia Dragoon, great choice. I always wondered how awesome Firehawk would look if it were made on the Mega Drive, and Alisia Dragoon kind of answered that question. @JohnHassink, where are the Rocky music hints in the Alisia Dragoon soundtrack? I'm not too familiar with the movies.

If anyone is interested, here's the Project 2612 link:

It's actually the same rip as Zophar's, but it has the advantage of being smaller when unpacked (since it's VGZ) and you can listen to it online. Plus Project 2612 has more info about it.

* The Stage 1-3 music shares a musical motive with the ending music of Rocky (it's there in the beginning of the video and back at 3:00).
* The Stage 3 music seems a bit inspired by Eye Of The Tiger, which is in Rocky III.

Fyi, Mega Drive VGMs are on Project2612, e.g. Alisia Dragoon VGM. Not supported by VGMPlay for MSX though (yet?)...

The Alisia Dragoon music is great by the way :). It had it linked to me a couple of times before so I think many people like it :).

Although I'm not much of a VGM fanatic (I prefer youtube and mp3s), I would like to mention a favorite of mine (soundchip not msx supported yet unfortunately).

The Scheme by Brothtec, a game for the PC-88, released in 1988.

Although I do not know all of his work, I really like the musical work of Yuzo Koshiro, especially his work on Streets of Rage 2. I didn't know about The Scheme until I downloaded some msx music pack containing many songs from different games for various japanese mml-based replayers. The song that really stood out from that pack was an MSX rendition of I'll Save You All My Justice, which has since then grown to be one of my of my favorite songs of all time (though that is a long list). At some point I want to do a remake of it on the MSX, and I even created a song in Trilotracker mainly inspired by this one ;)

Other favorites from this soundtrack are Perpertual Dark! and Angry Fist
