Ah, yeah. This game has a few quirks like that. We weren't really seeking to fix them -- just translate the text (though we did fix the one thanks to MP83 and Guillian, but only because it was totally game-breaking; kind of amazing such a huge bug found its way into a retail game without being caught, but I guess that just lends credence to the idea that this was a really rushed title by a struggling developer!).

Also, yeah, we just left the G-P and Z-P names as-is, Japanese character and all. We could've changed it, but when MP83 asked if I wanted to pursue a change, I just kind of replied with, "meh." Wink Wasn't really worth it, I didn't think, since it's still totally readable as-is.

I remember the original of A Life M36 Planet doesn't on many MSX, for example, it crashes on NMS-8255 and HB-700P. Was that fixed on the translated version?

No, we're only just discovering that now. I don't think any of us had any idea the game was that crash-prone before we released this patch. So the English-patched version will have the same system restrictions in place as the original Japanese version, sadly.

The "bugfix" part of this patch has to do with an actual gameplay bug. Namely, there's an NPC who gives you a harmful item at one point in the game, which you can seemingly just drop and you'll be fine... but in the original Japanese version, if you ever talk with that NPC and receive his item, your entire game gets corrupted, to the point where you'll eventually find yourself unable to enter the final area, rendering the quest unfinishable.

Basically, when the NPC gives you the item, "Beta Virus" (or just "Virus" in the English-patched version), he un-sets several crucial system flags that basically cause another item in your inventory, "Seal," to no longer be recognized. You can tell if you've been hit by this bug by dying and taking down a password, and then if you continue with that password, the "Seal" in your inventory will have actually been replaced with either "Robin's Letter" or "Child's Toy" ("RobinNote" or "Toy" in the English-patched version).

It took us most of the project to figure out that that NPC was the cause of the bug, but MP83 eventually managed to figure it out through trial and error, and Guillian was able to fix it, so we incorporated his fix into the English patch.

The fix also addresses a couple other bugs that occasionally cause other less plot-crucial items in your inventory to be swapped when you resume play via password.

The fix does not address any other bugs of any kind, however, so any issues present in the Japanese version other than the above-noted ones will still be present in our patched version, sadly.

If anyone can fix the issue of the game not working on all MSX systems, we're more than happy to include the fix in the next version of the translation patch. They will be credited for the help, of course.

Speaking of fixes: Would it be possible to fix the way the START and CONTINUE options work in the title screen? It would make more sense for the CONTINUE option giving the password input screen and the START option just starting the game. Both options should still allow player to input their name, though.

Just to clarify, in case there's any confusion, MP83 is referring specifically to the title screen ONLY -- not the Game Over screen.

So ideally, on the title screen, if players select START, he wants it to just ask them to input a name, then jump right into the game without asking for a password.

And if players select CONTINUE, he wants it to basically do what it does right now when players select START.

One alternate solution to this that might be a little easier would be to reverse the functions of START and CONTINUE on the title screen. After all, right now, if you boot up the game and select CONTINUE from the title screen, it'll just start you at the very beginning with the default name "Ryu" -- whereas if you select START, it'll ask for your name and password.

Only problem with that alternate solution is, it might be a little confusing to players who selected START at the beginning of their play session and got no name-entry screen, then went to enter a password later on and suddenly did. They'd wonder what the name-entry screen was all about! So MP83's suggestion is still a bit more ideal.

On the Game Over screen, then, I think the change Larsthe18th made is the only one that's really needed for a smoother experience: having the cursor default to CONTINUE rather than START. Though I might also suggest changing the option "START" on this screen to read "PASSWORD" (or "PWD" or "PASS" or something) instead, to make it clearer what it does, as it is definitely a little user-unfriendly right now.

I looked into the ROM and I realize you've had a lot of work to translate this game. It contains a lot of texts. Great job !

Good News ! I understood the cause of the problem. Interrupts routine is buggy.
To fix it, you must replace the following bytes in the file.

Replace “3E 00 32 00 60 3E 01 32 00 68 3E 02 32 00 70 3E 03 32 00 78 C3 D7 40”
by “AF F3 32 00 60 3C 32 00 68 3C 32 00 70 3C FB 32 00 78 C3 D7 40 00 00” at 0047h in file.

and “3E 00 32 00 60 3E 01 32 00 68 3E 02”
by “AF F3 32 00 60 3C 32 00 68 3E 02 FB”

also “CD 93 00 C9” by “C3 93 00 C9” and “CD E5 6F C9” by “C3 E5 6F C9”.

I think you can also replace all “CD 02 44” by “32 00 78”. This is faster and the emulators recognize Rom mapper more easily.

I make a ROM with the above modifications for you to try: M36E.zip

To fix the texts you must probably replace all A0h by 20h for the spaces.
A few other characters must be replaced too because the non-Japanese MSX have a different font.
You can base on the international or european fonts taking into account the Japanese font.

Last thing, it seems that some texts have been forgotten because I found by chance an untranslated text at F5F6h (maybe this is the same as at D5FCh.

Good luck for the rest. I hope the project will be pursued to the end.
