@gdx Hmm... It seems that my knowledge of Japanese text adventures is not very good. Converted DSK to ROM work if you convert back to DSK.

Yeah the problem with all of those listings is that it seems like most of the disc drives don't work.

Yes, the rubber belt is now ~25 years old... They tend to dry. It's not very hard to replace, but indeed requires some effort.

Some DSKs converted to ROM can't back to DSK (Aleste 2, etc).
512kB megaroms with 8K Mapper also require more of 512K RAM when cracked. (eg: Blade Lords, Hydlide 3, Manbow 2, etc)

One thing I would say about the ST is the IO interference in the FM sound circuit.

I don't know if this was corrected in the GT? If it was, then I would go for the GT!

There are fixes made to the mainboard, but there's a bug in the MSX-MUSIC implementation. Read the wiki and the links to learn more about that. ;-)

Agreed. I own a ST upgraded to 512K and I don't feel the need to have a GT at all.

I have a GT, I had the choice a year ago, but I was thinking, If I choose the ST, then I want to upgrade it's RAM and with the GT I didn't have to do that.
The way I see it is that the GT is straight out of the box a fully muscled MSX and the ST out of the box is still worth an upgrade.
But if I only saw a ST, I wouldnt hesitate and buy that one and upgrade it's RAM. Smile

I think the GT is useful if:

  • You are leveraging the SVHS output. It is really useful if you want to connect your MSX to a PC video capture card, as most of them have SVHS input and it provides similar quality to RGB. My GT is connected to a LCD TV by RGB and PC capture card by SVHS; I can't appreciate differences in image quality.
  • You want to play around with the MSX-MIDI. To be honest, I have not used this apart of listening to Illusion City in a Roland MT-32 and... though impressive I think it is better with standard FMPAC.

The ST has SVHS output as well, and Illusion City being one of the few games supporting its MIDI makes it marginally a pro, especially since this game chose to use a very inferior MT32 as a MIDI device.

Okay so for example there's these two GT models currently listed: https://www.jauce.com/auction/p590890171 & https://www.jauce.com/auction/k290588268

I'm having a hard time determining whether these two are working machines which can be salvaged. The google translate is not at all helpful.

Is it worth it to just buy a machine and keep my fingers crossed?

The second one looks to be in excellent condition! And shown to be working.
I would go for that one, you very rarely see them in such good nick!

(and it's a great starting price!)

From what I can make out, the space bar is not working and the floppy drive needs a new belt. You can either repair the membrane or buy a new one. And the belts always go on Turbo-R machines (but remember it's 25 years old), they're easily replaced (although getting harder to find these days).
