When you paste the Japanese descriptions in google translate manually you get better translations.

The first one says it’s not been tested therefore sold as junk. Most of the other issues you can see in the pictures, some dirt and rust but nothing that can’t be cleaned up I think. Note the yellowing of the keys isn’t dirt but discolouration of the plastic by the sun, very common on turboR’s (I keep mine under a sheet when not used to prevent that).

The second says it boots, but the disk drive doesn’t work (95% chance FDD belt needs replacement), and the space bar seems like it’s stuck. The latter issue could be either simple dirt in the mechanism, or broken plastic which would be harder to resolve without proper replacement parts.

I bought mine as junk (untested) as well, but I could see from the pictures that it was in good condition, and after I got it I only needed to replace the FDD belt and clean up the battery compartment (leakage). It saved quite a penny compared to buying a fully tested and revised model, but of course I took some risk of it possibly needing repairs beyond my capabilities and having to let someone with more repairing knowledge take care of it.

Same for me, i bought my ST as 'junk' too, only looking at the provided pictures. And indeed the belt of FDD needed replacement, other than that it was in perfect shape.

I have both an ST and a GT. My ST is upgraded to 512Kb. With both I can play any game I want and I do not have a favourite machine, as both perform the same.

Was junk not their word for "I didn't have a screen to test it on/I didn't care, cuz old crap" instead of "it's broken".
And if broken, the usual suspects are the drive belt and capacitors. That's never the end of it Smile

Yeah, a bit different from the English meaning, on Yahoo Auctions JP junk can mean anything ranging from just untested (so sold as “junk” to safeguard the seller from complaints), to some minor issues like drive belt needing replacement, to bigger issues. Usually the description will tell which of these it is.

Thanks everyone for the replies

I'm not sure if I should take the chance on the machine with the broken spacebar. That seems like it may be an awful tricky fix.

I'll have to think a bit on what to go for.

Yeah the space bar is a bit of a gamble.

If I search for FS-A1ST I see quite a few more choices offered… some even repaired, another including a replacement drive belt. Those don’t seem like bad deals.

I promise you won’t miss the GT. If I had an ST I would upgrade it to 512K (easy!) and have exactly the same experience, with the added convenience of having a separate audio-out. Only thing I would miss is the built-in MIDI which I use occasionally for some music stuff, but that can be added with a cartridge. Any turboR software will support both ST and GT either way, since nobody’s going to reduce the target audience for a turboR game even further by having high memory requirements.

[Edit: @Colemu Oh yeah! Indeed that doesn’t look good at all.]

After looking at the pictures properly, I agree.
It also looks like the Midi In & Out are also broken...

@Grauw

Can't believe it sold for over 500 euros!
Prices are crazy for the GT these days, even apparently broken ones... Shocked!
