Matter of tweaking. You could add random noise higher up in the fire to create random bursts, or move pixels towards the centre, or smooth things horizontally and/or vertically etc. I'm more impressed by the shown framerate actually.

If i say something like: 3 main whales here, it: fluctuations, perturbations, and resonance answer of system oscillations, you will still have many more questions. Therefore, don't ask please

Thank you anyway, and yes: "generate noise at the bottom, and then smooth it out while moving up", it still yet this method, but have 3 random ingredients, as i say above. And my little secret for Z80, it counting dependings all this ingredients from others, not using two others random generators (coz if you doo it, you will see all incredible propertyes of depends MSX random generator from time).
Therefore, just use first time: x=rnd(1)*188
And then, only add:
x=(x+30) mod 188
or
x=(x+30)-(x>188)*188
or
x=(x+30): if x>188 then x=x-188
And you will get nice functional gradient for fire algorithm.

Wow, I'm very impressed. I've done my share of scanline based color tricks, but this fire is something more. good job

Rather than the regular 'diffuse and smooth' routine, it may be a 2d-array telling every fire pixel which way to fly, kind of how the weather report works.

Very nice effects! I love this kind of stuff. When a new and genuine MSX2 demo?
