HI
I want to give my contribution with my experience with the CF card in my Carnivore2
I had the same problem because after used windows 10 to put rom games into my Carnovire2 CF card it never boot in msxdos but only in basic.
I tried in all ways to repair, but never boot in dos mode, only in basic. I tried with windows 7 in a virtual machine (I havent any Pc with Seven or XP) but no way to solve.
I have a PC with Linux and so I inserted my CF card. I used Gparted to partition and then format it in FAT 16, creating the boot flag in first partition. I put the nextor files in it and everything works.
Now I will always do all the necessary operations with Linux. Never again pass the CF card in windows 10.

Hi all,

There is a newer version of nextor and I would like to use that for my Canrnivore2. However, before I wipe my card, I have a few questions. First, the manual of carnivore states that I need to put bidecmfc.bin in the c2man.com folder. Should I replace that file (bidecmfc.bin) with the newest Nestor file (the sunrise IDE only version) or is there another version? The filenames are different and the Carnivore nextor BIOS is 2 years old in Github.

Thanks

Yes that is what you have to do. I also flashed the nextor sunrise IDE ROM renamed to bidecmfc.bin to my C2 in that way. It's working fine for me. Make sure you have a backup way of booting into DOS (e.g. floppy or MFR) with C2MAN.COM and the old BIDECMFC.BIN (and preferably also the boot block and fm-pac rom) in case something goes wrong with flashing and you have to start over...

For the rest you just replace NEXTOR.SYS and the Nextor tools (I have them in A:\BIN) and you should be good to go.

I'm having similar trouble to libero & Curriculum Crasher here. I have a CX7/128 and a just-ordered Carnivore2. When I put a FAT16 formatted disk (using gparted) in the Carnivore and boot, I get the main boot screen and go to the first option. The CF card is detected, a white LED glows and I get sent right to BASIC. If I CALL FDISK it hangs on the 2nd screen, every time. I've tried putting the nextor.7z files on the root of the CF card but nothing changes. What else can I try?

You will need a menu entry for IDE only on the C2. If that does not exist you cannot use the CALL FDISK function. You can add the menu entry if you are able to boot into MSX-DOS from floppy and use C2MAN

Right, i'm in the same stuck spot as the other posters however. I can't create a new menu entry because i can't get into MSX-DOS to run c2man. It boots right to basic. I don't have a floppy drive.

@grackle - make sure you don't just format card with FAT16 which was previously formatted by Windows - because Windows doesn't create an MSDOS partition table (it just uses the raw disk space as the single partition with no partition table). You have to delete every partition on CF, create an MSDOS type partition table, then create a partition (or a few if your disk is >4Gb, you can mount it later from autoexec.bat in Nextor) and format it. Also, gparted wants to reserve 1Mb before partition start but i don't remember right now if it matters, i did this quite a while ago, but should be ok iirc

@Pencioner — i appreciate the help. The Carnivore2 getting started PDF suggests I use Windows to format the disk, which I’ve tried (as well as gparted) to no success. If the MSDOS partition table was required, and Windows doesn’t make one, I’m confused why the Carnivore2 instructions would suggest using Windows!

I will try again in Linux, and I also got a different brand of CF card to try. If I can’t get it to work, is the next step getting an floppy drive? Is there one in particular this community likes and would work with my CX7/128?

Lastly, is the white LED supposed to be on all the time or is it a flashing HDD indicator? Mine goes on after the Sunrise IDE check at boot and never turns off until I turn off the computer. I’m wondering if that is a suggestion something else is messed up.

With Windows there's special programs which format differently. Name of tool is 'SD card formatter' or like that. Despite the SD in name, it should format CFs as well, but i never tried that. Standard Windows formatting tool is not suitable Smile

For the floppies, the old 'true' floppy interfaces are expensive and hard to find nowadays, but there's some Gotek-based solutions developed, also there's a very nice Rookie Drive NX which can either use floppy USB interfaces (not every will work and not all have 720K support, but for your purpose you can use 1.44M disks and it works fine too) or emulate a DSK from USB stick. Very nice hardware and worth , not sure if it is available at the moment, but if you contact Xavirompe, the developer, you probably can get one, link. I tried 4 different USB floppies, and 2 of them worked well (Toshiba branded was the best because it also supports 720K disks)
