Hi all, I’ve started to play ‘Firebird’ recently and I wonder a bit about some options.

The ‘coins’ you can earn in this game are flames. By hitting the F2 button you can acquire improved weapons. But that system seems a bit different compared to the upgrade-types of RPGs. For example, it seems that you can always buy the same weapon over and over again and nothing improves (no upgrades; so basically a waste of flames), while more expensive weapons don’t seem to make a lot of difference.

By hitting the F3 button the items appear that are being collected like eggs (or shoes?), cards, ladybugs, etc. But what is the use of some of them? And how can they be used? I know that tables open gates and they are used automatically. There is not really anything to be found on the internet about it. Just demos, passwords, etc. Thanks!

Not at home right now, so I can't verify things in the game itself, but at least I can tell you:
The 'coins' are actually feathers of the Firebird. Smile I think the flickering ones count for 10.
I think the round shoes improve your running speed, while the square shoes do the same for your jump.
The ladybug, it could be (temporary) auto/rapid fire, but it's too long ago for me.

There's a translation ips and a translated manual (clicky).
This might improve your joy and knowledge quite a lot.

Thanks John, Meits!
So it's basically that all found items apply themselves? No need to execute any.

Meits, I know about that page but I couldn't find the translated manual. Do you know where it is located exactly?
I do play the translated version and it's cool to get to know something about the game, as I used to play the Japanese one in the 1990s.

By the way, in the game itself I think I reached the end phase, but I was sent back because apparently I missed some item....

The weapons (and lives) you can buy are indeed one set strength. Buying again doesn't make it stronger. Some bosses are easier to defeat with some weapons. So you could switch at bosses but I prefer some weapons. See what you like...

The use of the items is in the pdf in the zip file (described in a similar round about way as in the manual). Some items do actually need a key press, like the map, the scroll and the item that allows you to continue.

And indeed there is a way to get sent back if you don't have something, but I won't spoil that (besides the game will give you a hint if you do). So just try to collect all.

Oh, how cool to be able to read the manual. Smile
So, turns out I was full of baloney regarding the "square shoes" (it's an accessories box, lol). Wink Must have mistaken the effect which your moving speed has on the jump.

Thanks all! These contributions are brilliant. In this way we preserve hints & tips and surroundig material for people who will play such games in the future.

Thanks Meits for the url and Randam for the additional tips! So F4 and F5 should be used for the map and the scroll.
I never knew about 'jumping'...... That translated manual is absolutely wonderful. It gives even much more meaning to the game instead of just shooting enemies. And thanks John for those urls! I have bookmarked the 1 hour manga movie to view this weekend. I learned in the past days that the story of the firebird is so much broader than just a Konami MSX game.

Unfortunaly, the passwords for the cheats will not work on the 'MSX Translations' version, only on the Japanese version or the Django translation.
