언어 설정:

Last week, the annual Retropolis took place in Valencia (Spain). Retrópolis Valencia is a non-profit event whose purpose is the dissemination, promotion and preservation of the video game culture and classic computing , both of the equipment marketed during the disembarkation of information technology in the domestic and family sphere and of the software developed , inside and outside our country, the fruit of a video game industry that was taking its first steps.

The people behind the MSXVR gave a presentation about its history, progress and what motivated them to develop this system. For those who missed it, it has been put online and includes English subtitles.

The MSXVR combines emulation with hardware in real time and offers compatibility with the whole family of MSX Computers. It implements many different sound chips (PSG, MSX Music, MSX Audio, SCC, SCC+, OPL3, OPL4, SID) and the V9990. 500 Cartridges, mouses, trackballs etc have already been tested succesfully. From the outside, it has that MSX look and feel.

The MSXVR will also have new functionalities and features:

  • R-8000, a Z80/R800 compatible CPU (3.5-42 MHz overclock) with new CPU instructions
  • V9978, 100% compatible with V9938/9958, 4 MB VRAM

The creators think this could have been the MSX3.

  • 1 PSU (12 V, 12.5A)

Details about preordering will hopefully be clear in September 2019. Estimated time of delivery is around the end of 2019 (December, January 2020). Currently, the project status is "prototype-II". The next step will be Prototype-III, the master candidate. Three books about the system will be available.

The news post has been corrected by Hamlet, I hope it's ok now.

The possibilities of the device seem endless. What really appeals to me is the philosophy that you turn on the computer and can start making things right away. It was the same in the eighties, when we were young. Modern computers are not that accessible, but the MSXVR seems to be. If MSX were to be reinvented in the 21st century, I think it would be exactly this. I can hardly believe that the device can do as much as is promised. It must have been a lot of work. It's truly exciting.

Good luck with the final stages!

From the beginning I didn't believe in this project. Too many shady videos without actual hardware and software running. Again, this presentation promises so much but shows so little. And with 'one hot summer' to go, you can not write 3 books, an OS, all the other software and make a complete machine. They all should have been ready by now so the presentation would include movies from the computer, the OS, all the other software and the machine itself. But again, we get only stills...

Please do understand, I love the specifications! And I love the project! And I hope I am historically wrong with my feelings. But I think a large part of this new MSX world still only exists in the head of its inventors...

Afaict, it's sort of a highly customized emulator + custom support hardware? Not quite clear, web site could do with a better look of what's under the hood.

Anyway: very cool stuff! And love the housing. Any chance they'll sell that separately?

And from the newspost..

Latok -> yes, you are right, all this sounds very crazy but we are working in this project some years ago. You can see how the hardware and software works currently in the youtube channel. Of course, we would like to show more things and we will do, but sincereslly, we are not inventing nothing in that presentation. There are a lot of things done. It is something real. About the books, yes, they are in Spanish (at the moment) and the VR-BASIC is the most advanced (80%). The VR-DOS is 50% and the VR-Script have not been started .. We hope to have them completed this year.

Retrotechie -> 150W yes .. we have 4 slots and we need power to have a good cartridge compatibility. All this cartridge compatibility has been a trauma for us during this years Smile

Mumbly -> If you want to send me the ROM .. I will test it, no problem. I will try to capture a video or similar to show you how it works.

Thank you for your comments and if you consider that some information should be improved or whatever thing, please, don't hesitate to comment it.

I will buy one unit for sure!

It is the first complete and fully MSX compliant computer (all generations) since the Panasonic FS-A1GT was produced.

And I don't really care if it is a mix between SW emulation running on a Raspberry Pi + specific HW as long as it behaves as a real MSX.

And look at the specs!: MSX, MSX2, MSX2+, MSXturboR compatible with 4 MSX cartridge slots plus lots of extensions supported: SCC, MSX-Music, MSX-Audio, OPL4, V9990,... I'm sold!

I thought someone would correct the news post, or there'd be a clarification like "no it's just what we use for testing". Not "it's needed". That is unbelievable! Let's do the math:

MSX cartridge spec is 5V, max. 300 mA (1.5W) per slot, and +12V and -12V 50 mA each (not sure if +/-12V is per machine, or per slot, let's assume the latter). 2x 12V x 50 mA = 1.2W, bringing us to 2.7W per slot. But let's be veeeerrry generous, assume each cartridge uses double the allowed 300 mA @5V, and each cartridge uses both +12 and -12V @ double the allowed current (100 mA each). With 4 cartridges, that would bring us to 4x 5.4 = 21.6W. Note that this is already a ridiculously high number. And slotexpanders normally bring their own external power.

But even then, that leaves 150 - 22 = 128W going into the main unit. Which is essentially a kind of set-top box housed in a plastic keyboard. Where could that 128W possibly go? Have you ever tried putting a 100W lightbulb in a keyboard sized plastic box, leave it on, and see what happens? No need - chances are you'll have a fire on your hands. Shocked! For comparison:

Routers, media players & similar boxes: typically 5..20W (latter number is on the high side).
Desktop MSX2 machines: around 40W or so (that's rather big metal boxes). Including losses for the internal psu.
A self-built power supply I have here, designed to power machines like Sony HB-G900, Philips NMS8280, Commodore Amiga or Atari ST if needed: tops out around 30W continuous (eg. 5V @ 4A + 12V @ 1A).

So either that psu is like 3..5x oversized, someone can't do math, or you guys need some serious help with the power circuit in that box.

In this video you say Operation Pig was made with VR-Script. But now you say the VR-Script has not been developed yet. That is exactly what I mean. Most of your videos are concept videos. Of how things could be.

Also, could you please react on RetroTechie his comments on the power supply? Maybe you can show me the inside of the machine so I can have a little more faith. Because I want to believe, I really do Smile

Retrotechie -> Yes, you are totally right. We are trying to recreate a particle collision system like CERN and we need a good power supply :-)
Joking aside, excuse me … maybe my explanation about the cartridge problems was not 100% correct.
The PSU is OFF THE SHELF … really we had problems some PCBs ago with the Raspberry and its latest versions 3B/3B+ and USB ports … problems that affected the hardware part of slots, etc … to be sure that we did not have these problems (electrical warning problems with the Rasp) and to continue advancing …
We used a Pico ATX 120W and an external PSU with enough capacity. We have never had any problems with temperature and we have never burnt any devices .. but in any case, we have taken security considerations into account like fuses and of course and we have planned to accomplish a CE certification. So, yes, 12V/12’5A is not the final solution (it is the current one) for sure it is not necessary (OVER KILL) and it is mandatory for us to reduce costs and the weight of the final packaging.

Latok -> VR-Script is working pretty well .. we can sure you. We was refering to the book in relation with the VR-Script. We are sorry for the videos and the information of the project will be like it is. We try to do it the better possible from our possibilites. We have a lot of things to do and our intention is to keep informed the people. Thank you for your patience.

Yeah RPi power issues have been well documented. I'm going out on a limb now, but would:

RetroPie + cartridge reader on steroids + custom case/keyboard + boatload of modified / newly written software

...be a fair assessment of "the nature of the beast"? If so: just say so, and I'm sure people will appreciate / value it as such. Cool

Asking because I'm still having some difficulty understanding what exactly it is, or is not. And seems I'm not the only one there.

Also: do you have anyone on your team with expertise concerning power (distribution), signal integrity etc? In complex projects like this, the importance of clean, reliable power (apart from how much of it), or the effect of wiring & how it's laid out, is often underestimated. Could help a great deal to have a 'pro' in such matters on the team. Not voluteering btw... I have my own projects to worry about. LOL!

Well .. miraculously .. I found an electric engineer, with retro hobbies and living closest of my home .. it was ... I don't know if it was God or the demon Smile but I am very happy working with this guy. I think the proximity is vital too for a project like this.

About this project ... well ... you should forget the technical part and focus about the main goal. This project is a new MSX computer. So, we need MSX compatibility (software/hardware) and new features, all inside a "box" with an MSX look. In this terms, this project mix all this things. The final idea is like to buy another MSX in a shop but with extras.

If I switch on the computer .. MSXVR logo appears .. If I have a cartridge plugged boots it .. if not .. run VRDOS or VRBASIC or VRSYSTEM depending what configuration choose the user. Basically like an MSX.

V9978 is like V9938/V9958 ... you use the same IO Ports functionality. V9978 improves the v9958 mantaining the same registers, VRAM access, etc. We could say that is the same that occurred with V9938 and V9958.
V9990 is something totally different.

V9978 is not a real chip. This chip was not produced by Yamaha. It is an emulated invention.
V9990 is a real chip.

V9978 specs are not closed yet. It has more VRAM, color palette ARGB8888, new BMP Mode (256x212x8 pal mode), new BMP Mode (512x212x8 pal mode), new TxtMode3 (80x24 full cololr)

No, but it was a real project of Yamaha that tried to combine V9958, DMA and V9990 features together (AFAIK, very little amount of paperwork has been found about this project). Therefore it is very bad idea to hijack this name for a project that is something completely different. I would rather suggest using name something like "VR958" or "V9958+" that does not let people to believe this has something to do with Yamaha original V9978 plans.

V9958+ is ok ... maybe V9968 could be correct too?

Ok MSXVR and NYYRIKKI, now it's clearer because I've read somewhere that the V9975 was designed to be somekind of v9990 backward compatible with the 58/38 but abandonned and replaced by the V9990 (not backward compatible at all).
Now, I see what you want to do with the V9975 (wathever the name) and it's a good idea.
I guess, that the V9990 is also available along with the 75 on your device. By the way, (if we can surimpose each other, then my dream comes true Smile )

Well, on the VRMSX youtube channel you see 'something' doing 'things', but these movies are almost all filmed in the dark and with only a part of the machine or the screen visible. Or it is not visible what's connected to the computer and what not and so on and so on. That's why I think it's still in a concept phase. Or in a very early production phase at its best. They do have the keyboard working, that's for sure. And they made a nice casing. But if there really is a ready PCB built inside this case, I don't believe it. Just yet.

Dark green, semi-transparent case would be cool. Like this but with smooth textured surface not high gloss.

Btw I think 2 cartridge slots is enough (personal preference is 1 on top and 1 on the back). The more features machine includes, the less need there is to plug extra cartridges in there. I rarely have >1 cartridge in my 1chipMSX for example, if one at all. More slots just degrade the design.

I do prefer 4 cartridge slots. Not everything is built in. You can add, for instance, external disk drives to use real floppy disks. Four is better than two!

Interesting set-up! But yeah 4 is better than 2.
I do wonder what the slot layout will be...

Also it would be nice if SFG (YM2151/YM2164) could be added as a supported audio device. And a ren-sha turbo slider would also be nice!

Sorry,
You're really sure with this text:

;DISPLAY SCREEN ON PAGE
;V9938/v9958 (64k/128K VRAM)
VDP[2]=nnnx xxxx  ;bit ;n = 1 or 0, x= aways 0
VDP[14]=xxxx xnnn ;64/128k ;n= bit 0-2 , x = aways 0

;V9978 (4096k VRAM) ???
VDP[2]=nnnn nnnn
VDP[2]=nnnn nnnn ; 4096k

In this case, is it really true?

SCREEN 5

SET PAGE 33,3 : BLOAD "GFX2.SC5",S

For the moment, no comment. Smile

Yes, it seems they are preparing the preorder stage: https://msxvr.blogspot.com/2018/11/status.html
And if google translate did a good job, they said on twitter that “it will be sooner than we think”.

That is an impressive device they have created. I really like all the extras like the debugger, the possibility to run other systems, etc...
It's to bad I already bought a Zemmix Neo which is sufficient for me. If I didn't have the Zemmix, I would have bought the MSXVR for sure!

I preordered as well. There is a lot to like on offer here.

However I really think putting the \ key on the far left is a bad idea, I would rather have a smaller BS (like MSX) or ENTER (like US international PC) key than a smaller left shift key. I would honestly prefer if the keyboard layout would be more MSX, less PC (as it is first and foremost an MSX imho), but I can understand that for the development IDE those PC keys could come in handy.

Also the device would have a greater MSX feel were the PSU be built into the case (like most table top MSXs).
