So uhm, about the MSX-MUSIC.

When you play a note in 9 channel mode and you switch to drum-mode, without doing a note-off first. What do you hear?

When you play a drum in drum-mode (let's say a cymbal, as it's a longer sound), and you switch to 9-channel mode. What do you hear?

I seem to recall in the 90s that there was some tracker being made by someone who claimed to have 'new FM-Pac hardware' voices.

I never heard what the results were but I assume they based it on tricks like this, or maybe by alternating between hardware voice types / attributes every frame? (much like to how sound effects are created on the PSG)

You mean Oracle, that had these new voices indeed (in MB this procedure was a bit clumsy). But that's not really what my question wasl. Wink

Yes, sorry, I was only trying to indicate that these kind of tricks could actually exist and it is thus an interesting question Smile

(So what was the result of these 'new' hardware voices in Oracle? Could it be used in actual music?)

Why this question? I can imagine that it would be useful if a music replayer would support mid-song switching. Even if you would have to silence the channels just before.

What wolf_ is wondering is if the hardware will handle this type of switching 'cleanly' or if we can maybe trick it into some sort of 'undocumented' state to produce new sounds, right?

Well, there are two things to consider;

1) Micro Cabin doesn't really use the hi-hats, only the bassdrums and toms. The rest (the noisy drums) are PSG. And since these kicks and toms are fairly short, you could wonder whether it'd be fruitful to alternate to 9-ch mode between kicks and toms. You could make some kind of reggae on channel 7, 8 and 9.

2) Channel 7, 8 and 9 are used to create the drum sounds, I wonder what influence you could have on drums if you'd switch to 9-channel mode while also playing notes during the switch, or the other way around (influence of e.g. the cymbal on melodic sounds while it's playing during the switch).

Moreover: I just don't know what it sounds like, I doubt anyone knows. So, after over thirty years I guess someone could find out, so that we can all die in peace. Hannibal

Almost as the same time as the idea "Well, let's try in basic with some old school MML" I shot this idea down. Because how to change the setting on the desired moment when the melody is played from a buffer, shutting down for a part of the playback time. It'd be impossible to do something usefull...

My gut feeling tells me that if you switch modes, the whole damn thing will be reset. Anything played on the first 6 channels will OFF.

Hmm... Let me at least try to proof/disproof that...

Edit:
In basic it won't work. Any call music statement empties the current buffer.

Just grab yer copy of Oracle here from MRC and hear for yourself what this new voices sound like. Actually, it was Wolf his idea to do such magic in Orc. Should not be hard to test this mode switching with Orc.. Hmm

I figure someone could test it by just sending the right registerdata to the msx music, prolly in asm.
