It is incredible how many new MSX hardware projects have been realized lately. This project wants to go back to the basics and uses original components. A homebrew project to build a MSX computer using discrete logic and original integrated circuits.
The makers ask you to help making decisions on how to build this hardware.
So the website has a survey to understand the preferences of the users better. It's a good opportunity for you to make a great contribution to the project!

IMHO the right way before you start a new MSX compatible computer design.

I have an idea no-one was implemented yet: a modular machine based on an FPGA. Without add-ons, it could be used as an MSX2+ like an One chip MSX. But there would be sockets for a real Z80, a real VDP etc. Then you could free the FPGA space taken by implementing these chips and use that for something else, like V9990 (if anyone ever implements that) or R800.

I will be the first Smile Already busy with this issue.

The question to ask, imho, is: "what do you want to do with it?"

I guess 1) have fun and 2) let it survive some extra decades when the big brands have died.

More like: "which software are you going to use?" Because, if people want it to be a better demo- and gaming machine than MSX is today, it needs specific attention to those details. If people don't care and want to do the exact same thing as yesterday, then no adjustments are required.

For what's worth, here's how I'd like a new MSX computer to be (I think I've said this a few times already but anyway): Smile

- Totaly looks & feel like an MSX computer (no e.g. 1-Chip-like stuff)
- Completely, utterly, 134% compatible with the good old MSX standard (MSX2 at least, MSX2+ would be nice)
- Turbo CPU (at least R800-ish)
- 4 cartridge slots, since one of the funniest aspects of owning a MSX is to plug tons of weird extensions to it
- Rewritable ROMs (but with a fallback mechanism to restore original ROMs if something goes wrong)
- Nice to have but not strictly necessary built-in extras: SD slot, USB ports, WiFi

Anything beyond that is nice but not essential in my very unimportant opinion.

Oh and I don't care what's inside the thing (original chips, FPGA, magical gnomes) as long as compatibility is not compromised.

If we wanted better demo- and gaming machine, we would just go buying such a machine. Or better, the chances are that we already have such machines, right in front of us right now.

MSX is living piece of computing history, for playing classic games, and for pushing the envelope when still making new stuff for it.

Then I guess it's a good thing that I preordered one, isn't it? Wink
