I am pretty sure that i have read articles that there are certain machines that can be upgraded from msx1 to msx2.For some spectravision machines i think it was done by some people.
I assume it would be easy to upgrade an msx1 machine to msx2 -(upgrade bios, vdp, diskrom etc)- but not upgrade the ram, wouldn't then be an msx2 machine with fewer than 64kbytes of ram?
Would this be an msx2 machine?
No, msx2 must have at least 64kbytes of ram. But it does not need a diskrom.
Some msx1 machines have a v9938 already. So easier to convert them.
The Konami games already had their own mapper system. Some cartridges used the extra space for ROM contend, others like the Snatcher used this for RAM (could load Konami games and play SCC music) ... Since other machines already use external memory expansions, there is no need for a great amount of internal memory in the machine.
256kb is fine
Now refloating threads again, sorry if this causes any inconvenience.
Apart from making the most of my MSX1, I want also, of course, a MSX2. I see that VG-8235 is probably the cheapest of European models (the Japanese ones are prettier, but work in 110v), but it has 128k RAM. After reading all this thread I'm still not sure if I would have problems with games. Not interested in programs, just gaming.
What games require 256k RAM? Any of the must have ones (Konami ones for example)?
Original rom games and disk games will work.
Only cracked megaroms adapted to disk will give problems
Also some disk demos could fail

So actually if I don't download language parched games or so, I shouldn't need more than the original 128k, right? That's good to know, because this model is clearly cheaper than other ones. Thanks
Be aware that when I say original game roms I mean the physical cartridge
In case you do not want to collect original cartridges the cheapest solution is to buy a flash rom where you can load the rom dumps of the original games
Look for Eric Boez or Manuel Pazos sites
You must realize that an original 8235 has a 360K diskdrive. I would opt for another model.
