In 1988 there was a reader´s short story in "The Games Machine" magazine. That boy was on holiday trip in Spain with his family and he visited local software store and found nice MSX game and when he went to counter with that cassette, seller took his cassette and went to backroom and came back with another cassette which was the pirated copy of the game boy wanted. That boy was "a bit " amazed....

In '80 piracy was quite normal for magazines in Italy.

Just change the name of the game, alter the producer logo,
et voilà, a new game in your compilation is ready.

Some of them copied games not only from the original, but also each others.
Smile

I would also say that since the early nineties the italian copyright laws have finally included the commercial software and extended the digital rights, and it's not anymore possible to publish these kind of magazines in Italy.
( Don't expect to come here and find a XBOX360 Magazine with a DVD containing 10 pirated games Big smile )

BTW I really can't criticize too much these publication... I have discovered the wonderful world of the MSX with that kind of magazines Wink

If you are wondering how is looking one of these pirated games, here are two snapshots taken from DEXOID, UOVO SODO, PSYCHOBLAST and ALIENOID:

And now let's see if you can guess which games are hidden under these pirated versions :D

Heh, here in Brazil that was quite commmon too... not only in altered games (most of the cases with translated names) - but even worst, some companies used to sell the same game with different names! Ex: Feud was sold also as "magic conflict" or "halloween"(!)

As for translated games, we had lots of "Futebol" (Soccer) which sometimes was Konami´s Soccer, sometimes other soccer games... (Like Super Soccer which I have on cartridge, heh)

Psychoblast is spoiled MSX conversion of Jeff Minter´s Cool blasting game "VOIDRUNNER". Spoiled because it´s hellishly SLOW on MSX.... Sad Try MSX version first , and then try Commodore 64 original to see what I mean, all the feeling is lost in bad MSX conversion. Sad Crazy

I love VOID RUNNER, even if I had to admit that it is somewhat slower than the ZX version. I haven't played the C64 original. The idea of a whole char-based arcade is cool. Anyway, DESOLATOR is and will be one of my favourite non-japanese arcade games.
