Hi to all,

is there a place where I can download an image file of a working CF-Card, ready to write to a real CF-Card, to use with Sunrise IDE?

This is beacuse I (and many people) have no MSXes with working floppy drives, so it could be useful to have a DSK image file ready to flash to a 128MB or more flash card. Also with Win's tool needed to do this operation...

Thankyou in advance.

If you have a MegaFlashROM SCC you can use DSK2ROM and you will not need a floppy drive.
(Never tried that, but I think it should work.)

Hi manuel, thankyou for your reply, but this is not the point... my problem is, I own a Sunrise's IDE-CF but I cannot format 128MB drive (with IDEFDISK) because my floppy drive is damaged. I wonder if there's a ready made formatted 128MB DSK file to write into the flash card.

Hi enribar,

Perhaps the method in this thread will work.
I'm going to try it mysel too.....

Hi Huey, thankyou, I spent the last weekend to try the method you mentioned but with no success... :-(
I tried Dubaron, WinImage, and many other tools...
Many people have difficulties in partitionating a drive to make it accessible by IDEs, mainly because of a not working floppy drive. In any case it's always a waste of time...
I don't know why it's so difficult to put somewhere a working image file, beside a link to a tool (freeware, shareware, trial) that can write this image to a CF-Card and... you're ready to go!

I cannot test now but I think I succesfully made a CF-card using the method.

Could you tell where things went wrong? Maybe I can help.

I had problems rewriting the image back to the CF (in Dubaron I needed to select 'ingore' to actually copt the image back).

P.s. my CF is 128MB too. Not sure but perhaps you can write my image to your card?

Me too at the moment cannot test since I'm not at home: the only thing I can do now is to test you image on blueMSX, if you have it available.
I find Dubaron not so usable to my brain... :-(
I select my CF-Card drive and then click on "Write to file".
Format is "raw": is this a right format?

Yes.

1-> save as RAW and rename it to .DSK
2-> instert as HDD image in BlueMSX (IDE-CF reader in slot one)
3-> start using [DEL] (or was it [DEL] pressed during boot with a DOS2 disk + idefdisk.com
4-> start idefdisk.com
5-> generate part table
6--> display partition table and make partition 1 boot ([b])
7-> write partition table
8> initialise the partitions [i]
9-> restart MSX
10-> copy the command2.com and the msxdos2.sys to a: (floppy will be drive e: with 128mb - 4 partitions)
11->restart msx to check
12-> copy the DSK image to a new file with extension .RAW
13-> in Dubaron select the CF card and choose (right mouse) destructive actions. and write the file. Read instruction carefully and choose ignore in the last dialog!!!!
14-> close the CF card correctly in windows! ('Safely remove hardware')

This is what I did.

Just to be on safe side I recommend you to make disk image of your not formatted CF card (to get exactly right size image) then partition it with emulator, put the software you need and write the image back to the CF. BlueMSX or OpenMSX should do the job for you, but with OpenMSX make sure that the image size on setup file is smaller than the actual image. Otherways it will be expanded automatically.

I've used Dubaron diskimage to handle CF images. It seems that the developers of this software have had pretty much trouble with stupid USA citisens who have tried to sue them for destroying their data Smile Write image is under "destructive actions" and after that you have to read really carefully all the "Are you sure?", "Are you sure that you are not unsure?" etc. type of warnings to get the things done.

Thankyou very much to all of you!

I complete instructions with some other infos:

Yes.

2-> instert as HDD image in BlueMSX (IDE-CF reader in slot one)
3-> start using [DEL] (or was it [DEL] pressed during boot with a DOS2 disk + idefdisk.com

11-> restart msx to check
12-> copy the DSK image to a new file with extension .RAW
13-> in Dubaron select the CF card and choose (right mouse) destructive actions, and write the file selecting:
- Destructive actions;
- Load from disk;
- write "i agree" in textbox below message;
- read instruction carefully, confirm with yes, except at the last dialog box - choose "ignore";
14-> close the CF card correctly in Windows! ('Safely remove hardware')

I think it was the point: you can replace the floppy drive with the MegaFlashROM SCC. So, the disk image with the formatting software could be put on the Flash ROM, so that you can format the CF card without having a floppy drive. That was the point, wasn't it?
