Last year in Den Dolder, The Netherlands, during the 25th MSX Anniversary activities, some MSX handheld concepts were being showed to the public. Apart from the concepts themselves, for me it was motivating enough to see the MSX copyrightholder was involved in the project. Shortly after that meeting, to me it became clear the MSX copyrights are within the hands of MSX LC. I don't know whether MSX LC is also involved in these MSX handheld concepts.

I wonder if this NES handheld is approved by Nintendo. Would be quite something Smile Or is the whole NES being reverse engineered? Something like C-BIOS?

Darn, my 1768th posting. Lovely Cool

I don't see why this would be a problem to produce. This businesscase is much more positive than the OCM concept, that never took off.
There wouldn't be licensing issues regarding illegal emulation either, since you'd use the original cartridges..

I'm all for it, even if it would be 10-20$ more expensive.

It's unfortunate that MSX never took off in China, otherwise we'd probably have one of these handhelds already .. they don't care about copyrights of dead stuff (or life stuff..) :-)

The original NES patents expired somewhere in 2005 or so, and since then anyone can make and sell NES clones, but can't call it NES and obviously can't bundle commercial games with them.

MSX handheld would be nice, but hopefully it's not like the NES portable from the thinkgeek. I have one of those and it's absolutely crap. Famiclone ASIC that can't handle the usual suspects (SMB3, Castlevania 2 etc.). Also screen is an abomination.

Well, perhaps the 1cM is eventually something different than the audience envisioned. It's a construction kit with an MSX implementation. Its real value is the possibility to create completely new 'chips' with it, and for the audience the value is to have these new 'chips', thus having a dynamic computer.
In the end, I think most people are just gamers, retro freaks, MSX freaks and such who have less interest in the construction kit argument. Not at least because some people feel an MSX should remain an MSX as we've known for almost 26 years, not a hobbyist design where the whole functionality can be changed into something else.

Wolf, agreed. But I do expect the scene to make some slight enhancements in the future. Solve the sprites limitation, for instance.

Ah well, maybe not Smile

Most gamers, including myself, will accept "pocket MSX" in form of either highly portable emulator for mobile phone or as a cheap console running MSX emulator, like the 85$ Dingoo A320 (note: at the moment it only runs the way limited MSXAdvance under other emulator)

AFAIK, most of the modern NES clones were based on a single chip called: NES ON A CHIP. They are really, really crap. As dhau said, it's impossible to run some more complex games like Gradius II.

I gave up on the idea of "wanting" a portable MSX. For ~80USD it's possible to get a hackable fat psp that's perfectly capable of running fMSX on it.

The community could point it's efforts to port openMSX to psp, for example. "the MSX emulator that aims for perfection", with the new OSD menus on the PSP would really rock!

but there is no business model in that. There is no way to market this as a commercial product.
The MSX community is already small, and I think to keep it alive and fun, an "official" hardware product, *not* aimed at purely the hardcore MSX-er and geek, but at general audience is needed.
All those community initiatives are great, and highly appreciated, but I think the companies behind the OCM completely missed the boat marketing and pricing it.

D4E enterprise isn't pushing hard into the iPhone apps either, with only a few games available. I'm afraid that's typical for old-fashioned japanese companies, that don't look further than their own country. (not to mention the iPhone isn't very succesful in japan just because of that nationalistic approach)

anyway, I still hope some company picks this up and makes an MSX variant. Or what the heck, a universal one that can do C64, MSX, and some other old skool stuff by the flick of a switch. Smile

Hydlide, I think it's more the fact D4E doesn't have its main focus on MSX. It's merely a side project. I remember a story of someone who actually visited D4E to buy a 1chipMSX. They were very surprised this person wanted to buy a 1chipMSX and they asked several times if it wasn't a mistake and they also mentioned he better buy something else. I know, could have other reasons, but for me, it fits the picture.
