Why does everyone seem to want to develop for the craptastic VDP of the MSX1?

The shooter "Sea Sardine" by ASCII, 1991 had decent horizontal /1 pixel scroll in screen 5.

"Twinkle Star" by MSX Magazine did the same, as well as vertical scroll.

With both, I've seen the scroll only work with MSX2+ and up, so ofcourse they use the enhanced VDP.

I'm primarily interested in MSX1 and VDP1, because I had those machines in the 1980s (SVI 318, 728 and 738) and I always thought the graphics sucked big time compared to C64. Which I also had, as well as an Amiga 500. The lack of smooth scrolling was a big thing for me. I don't know why, but I was always impressed by the C64 and Amiga stuff where things moved smoothly at full frame rate. Walking, running, jumping, driving, flying. Fast-paced action. Who doesn't like that? The MSX did have good games where the lack of smooth scrolling was compensated by making the games otherwise very enjoyble, like F1 Spirit and Salamander.

We just participated in the Assembly '09 extreme graphics competition with an MSX1 screen 2 picture, and it was a fun thing to do, because of the well-known limitations of MSX1. Sure, we could have used MSX2 instead. Or Amiga. But where's the challenge and fun in that? Everybody knows you can easily get nice graphics out of an MSX2 or Amiga.
