Hi! I'm looking to get my first MSX computer! After looking around it seems my best bet would be a MSX2, the FS-A1 looked cool. Unless you have an Turbo R GT Wink I suppose it would have at least 2 cart ports and the ability to be upgraded (CPU upgrades). I'm a pretty adventurous modder and I love powerful retro computers! It has to be a Japanese system. The seller would also have to be in the US like me! If your interested in trades I have other cool retro video game stuff. Please let me know! Thanks in advance!

What kind of CPU upgrade were you thinking of? Most upgrades are RAM upgrades or video chip upgrades (MSX2 to MSX2+ chip).
A Japanese MSX2 only has 64kB RAM (usually), so you would probably want to upgrade that.
You also want a working disk drive.

I had just read about the upgrade on Bas site for the Panasonic MSX2. Other than that I don't have too much knowledge. Forgive my ignorance... Thanks for all the help! I plan to upgrade as much as possible!Tongue

upgrades can be done throught expansions on slot , like adding mass storage or gfx9000.

about internal expansion the max you can get is a:
msx2+ running at 7Mhz with 256 or 512kb, you will have to change ram /roms / cpu / video processor.
maybe internal dos2.

this means that you may have to have good tools and skill for unsoldering old components .

the pansonic fs a1 wx or wsx can very close to this , their cpu is already faster ( 5.7 Mhz ) and vdp iss already upgaded with roms. the ram upgrade ir fairly easy on this computer. the point is that you may end
up with a computer that costed you about the same price as a turboR.

id say if you plan to do lots of upgrades , you should directly buy a fs a1 st , it is cheaper at the end.

I have access to tools and such. While I would like to get a turbo-r, these mods will be done over a longer period of time. Someone in the US must have one?

"The max"??? sorry, but I'm not agree with you.
Thinking in a msx2 computer, you can do it and much more...

for example:
internal expansion of a primary slot:

or use sub-slots (not used from engine) primary slot expansion not needed

both are two good ways for hooking new devices, SD ,flashrom,etc...

It's not neccesary to have very good tools, solder/desolder and copper wire is enough.

using a cheap msx2 computer you can upgrade cpu (z80h) faster than a msx2+.
A philips msx2 vg8235 can be faster than a Panasonic msx2+ (not turboR), up to 8mhz:
For example you can build a good msx from a cheap msx2 computer:

Not agree again

That stuff is awesome. I'm definitely going to do an internal SD adapter and probably a music module as well. Still looking!Crying

I'd be more than willing haha. Shipping would be more than the whole computer though! Sad

that's not what id call 'a lot' : slot expansion are by the way not expansion themselves but just a way to enable allow more expansion ... :P
if you have concerns about limited slots on you rmachine try to think to gather interfaces on the same board like this one : sd+ethernet+usb
iledefra01.free.fr/msx/Image2.jpg
it does not require special skills , it is easy , you can do it
