For 64KB RAM microcomputers.
It is possible to copy the contend of the ROM (or external ROM cartridges) and save the binary file on cassette or disk. Patching the ROM is possible, some uses of this is the re-definition of characteres. Some programs do not work when someone change the slot configuration. There are programs on books that teach how to copy and modify the contend of the ROM BIOS.

The main Z80 CPU only see 64KB of memory (four pages of 16KB).The fisrt 16KB is the MSX-BIOS, the later 16KB is the MSX-BASIC. It is possible to use other languages on RAM, it is a matter of change the RAM pages on the slot selector.
