Modfiles can be played via the modplayer together with the moonsound.
Mp3 via the mp3 player ,also a lots of free stuff.
Retrotechie is right with saying there are enough chips. But if people want another it would be wise to program them into fpga.
But sofar I have the impression ,but I could be wrong you (marlonb) want to do it in a cpld right?

you can run an ENTIRE MSX system in one FPGA.

So using it for a simple soundchip is a bit OVERKILL not to mention expensive.

Besides FPGA's take the fun out of electronics (for me at least). Too easy.

Mp3 ...meaning tunes by paid Artists.. They are not for free..or didn't you know?

Well, I hope developers would still prefer taylor-made music which fits their production.
you can always find music which fits your production.

The artists who freely donate their music dont mind if you use their music as long as you credit them.

Small progress contemplation/update regarding the SlotXpander.

I was first contemplating to build a new add-on containing a snes-like GFX chip.

But what if instead I made a hardware blitter(built-into the base-module) with functions like:

- super high speed ram copies (with masking and bitshift for scrolling)
- super high speed polygon plotting
- super high speed fill (polygon fill) in ram
- block rotation in ram
- block flip-x/flip-y in ram

then you can use the MSX VDP with some smart double buffering techniques to show it on screen.
I believe even true full colored 3D games are then possible and you'll still be using true MSX hardware to do it (sort of)

let me know what you think of this idea?

You mean a piece of memory which is displayed through a DAC like bitmaps? That would be some sort of ADVRAM i guess with indeed high speed access to the VRAM but i doubt if it will be good enough for real high speed graphics.

But to be honest, i really think you have a good concept already. I don't know if you're still busy with the extra sound chip but a slot expander with SD card, SPI interface and RAM is very good already! If you make it too big, it will take more time and there is a risk that you will get fed up with it at some point and everything is finished for only 80 percent. Designing the final PCB is always less fun than engineering new hardware ofcourse...

I will make a small demo to see if it runs smooth enough and therefore worth doing.

Yes I know the concept is good enough.
But I still had some cycles left to kill. It would be a shame not to use it.

And yes I'm still working on the soundchip. I want to complete as many (different) add-ons as possible. In order to test
the base-module thoroughly.

And I dont think I will get fed up very soon as I dont have to go to work or anything for at least a couple of years(i've been bought out by larger company you see)
So this is the only project I'm working on.Smile

The reason why I'm asking is that I'm having 4 msx's at the moment but I really like my sony hb700 and phillips 8220.
The problem with these 2 computers is that a plug in expander will either stop you from using the keyboard because the cardridges are hanging over the keyboard (8220) or is sticking way out of the front of the machine (hb700) taking al the space on my desk.

there is a flatcable attached to a small cart which goes into the msx and the other end goes into the base module.
the cable can be as long as 1 meter.
