But there was no challenge for me in just building a slot-expander.
Remember this is a hobby of mine not my job so it has to be *CHALLENGING* and *FUN* for me otherwise I wont be motivated to continue.

.. FUN and CHALLENGING is the best there is .. so keep up the good work!LOL!

There is no challenge in developing of things that exist. So 15 euro of components is a loss. Producing of a normal expensive is simply not cheap per definition.
I like more an idea that includes a diskinterface via an usb-port so that one can use an usb-diskdrive e.g.

For me the challenge is in integrating it all in one device.
And to my knowledge there does not yet exist a piece of hardware for the MSX which contains a slot-expander AND a memory mapper AND a SD-interface.

And if I can keep the costs low enough why not built it?

I like more an idea that includes a diskinterface via an usb-port so that one can use an usb-diskdrive e.g.

This can be done. But it would be an expensive solution and hard to integrate it.

What I could do for now is prepare the design for using add-on's and not in the form of an expansion-slot ofcourse because it would need external power with at least 500mA so this would probably mess up your MSX.
But I would do this by integrating a 'simple' but fast USB-interface.
I could then in a later stage create an add-on adapter onto which the usb-diskdrives can be connected.
This adapter would then have it's own power.

This way people who dont want to use usb-diskdrives would not have to pay for it.
And ofcourse you would be able to use the USB-interface to communicate with a PC for networking or whatever.

sounds like a plan?

You forget what I said :into the first place making an expander isnot cheap. Second you save 15 euro. THird the padial sd interface has ram and sd. Fourth reason the issues retrotechie mentioned.
And using e.g. a harddisk with our old ide interface as well as megascsi need an extern supply

because.....???

you save 15 euro.

my groceries cost more than that.

THird the padial sd interface has ram and sd

have you seen the price of this device? 120euros??? How can he justify this?
Even with a 4mb SRAM which only costs about 20 euro's

And using e.g. a harddisk with our old ide interface as well as megascsi need an extern supply

huh? What does this have to do with anything?

----

My final words about this:

I am going to build this device [period].
I'm guessing the real problem you might have with this is that you sell the same (category) hardware and want to prevent me from doing so too. But this I dont know for sure.
Please let's not waste any more time discussing this subject.

I use this thread only to get additional information. Because I dont know where to look (yet).

yes you are guessing because it isnot true. I would even buy one since I need an expander. Only I donot require the extra's I already have and function without any problem
And that because .. you find soon out enough

I say go for it, your project sounds very interesting and I agree the only way you are going to get it all to work is to do both the hardware and software. Also if you are thinking of moving to New Zealand, just think about diverting a little to left and come live in Tasmania Smile

About challenge... There is also interest in a USB host adapter, some time ago someone posted this "MSX Forum: Hardware - USB module". But I guess the biggest challenge is always the software part, being a hardware guy. I took a short look at it a few weeks ago but i an too full with ideas and running projects at the moment and besides Leo is working on this but i don't know his progress. He plans to use the SPI interface unfortunately.

For me, a slotexpander would do. No extras, just a nice looking cased slot expander with external power supply.
