This racing game, inspired by Konami's Roadfighter, from Kai Magazine, let's you battle other rivals on 1 vs 1 fights to the death. Throw your rivals off the road before they do the same to you. The game has 24 stages with added replay-ability due to the 2 cars

Though it runs on MSX2 and higher in Screen 5 mode, the game shows advanced graphics on MSX2+ and turbo R where Screen 10 is used. Furthermore it supports MSX-Music (FM-Pac and others) on default Z80 machines, and advanced sounds using MSX-Audio (Music Module) and/or OPL4 on Panasonic 2+ and turbo R machines.

Supported hardware for Hi spec machine:

  • Panasonic MSX 2+ or turbo R with turbo enabled
  • Screen 10 (Aprox 11000 simultaneous colors on screen)
  • Opl4/Moonsound compatible sound card (128k of ram required), or
  • FM pac AND Music Module (at the same time) (64k of ram required)

Supported hardware for medium spec machine:

  • NON Panasonic msx2+ without turbo cpu (Sony, Sanyo)
  • Screen 10 (Aprox 11000 simultaneous colors on screen)
  • 64k of RAM
  • FM Pac OR music module

Supported hardware for Low spec machine:

  • MSX2
  • Screen 5 (16 colors)
  • 64k of RAM
  • FM Pac OR Music Module

You can watch this video comparing the game on high spec and low spec (second half of the video). There is also a short playable demo available, giving you the first 4 stages.

You can order your pre-purchase by contacting KaiMagazine . The pre-purchase prices are 9 Euro for a downloadable digital version or 39 Euro for the physical cartridge version. The final prices after pre-purchase are €12 and €42.

Postage and shipping costs are €9,80 for Europe and €12,80 for the rest of the world.

To bad it has no Gr8Net support for the battle mode.
And you have your Music support to Smile
But nice product, it looks cool.
And when it plays as smooth as roadfighter it wil be a great game.

smooth?
It plays at 60 fps (road fighter plays at 30 fps).
Please make sure you select the youtube quality setting at HD 60 fps to watch the video at 60 fps, or even better, try the demo on a real msx (msx emulators break the scroll constantly and it is unplayable, plus there is a delay on the controls response time).
Also, the game should be played at 60fps on a real msx (instead of 50).
It is way smoother than road fighter.

Looks nice! I prefer MSX-MUSIC over OPL4 WAVE anytime Smile We should use the
OPL4 (4OP) FM channels more instead of only the wave part.....

I also get the impression that speed is "low"... maybe the size of the car (larger than the sprite used in road fighter) tends to reduce the "speed feeling" compared with road width.
Did you try to "double" the vertical scroll speed?

Anyway great work, especially the turbo R+OPL4 version... I'm charmed by the attention to details like the puddles that change aspect after the car has "splashed" them Cool

120Km/h is the max speed limit here in Spain not to be fined Tongue

Some more scroll speed could indeed give some more sense of speed.

So, this is a dangerous highway battle at 120km/h to keep it street legal? Tongue

We will not release a Kai Magazine Collection 3 since game compilations devaluate our games. Those of you who are waiting for us to release a Kai Magazine collection 3 to get your hands on Dim X and Highway Fighter, don't need to wait anymore.

Thank you for all your efforts in MSX coding.
I bought games from you, also one compilation. The compilation gives us the chance to play games, we would´t have bought as a single fullcost game. I don´t have money to burn, and I don´t understand your message, especially in this case. We are talking ´bout your new game. There are opinions, tips to get it even more better, to get more potential buyers. And your answer is

Please don´t misunderstand me, as I don´t want to missunderstand you, but this sounds weird.
"If you don´t like our new game, we don´t give it away for less."
You don´t have to reduce the price for a new game, before it is released. Nobody want you to do this.
Maybe you will think about, when time has passed. Maybe not.
Maybe I am going to think about it when time has passed.
The times are over, when we got tons of illegeal copies in our shelf. I love to buy new stuff aslong I can afford it.
Sometimes I buy a game after I watched a Let´s Play, in many cases I played a demo or a copy of the game, so I decide if it´s worth to support the programmer. I like most of the games I own from you. But if it wasn´t on a compilation. there a re games too, I hadn´t bought for full pice.
Don´t mind! My Regards and thanks to your team.

I see how this could be missunderstood.
My statement was not an answer to the previous messages in this post. We published this decision everywhere.
There are many reasons not to release a Kai magazine collection 3.
Some of them being:
On the last Kai Magazine collection anouncement, many people wrote to me complaining (with reason) about the low price of the collection and the fact that they purchased the 3 independent games in it for a much bigger price.
That is a kick in the balls for many supporters. I should have never done that but I was desperate for money to pay the rent. When people gets desperate, they (me) tend to do stupid things without thinking on the consecuencies.
Another of the reasons is:
I examined the ratio on digital pre-purchases and cartridge pre-purchases.
Usually, digital prepurchases are a fraction of cartridge pre-purchases.
In this case, there are more digital purchases than cartridges.
Numbers are ok, I am not complaining, and the game is being liked, I receive all kinds of feedback from everywhere (thank you everyone), but this shows me that something is wrong if there are more digital orders than cartridges when it has always been 2 digital orders for every 10 cartridges.
This made me think that, while the game is liked and successful, some buyers who always purchased all previous games on cartridge now they are waiting for a kai magazine compilation.
Once I realised that possibility I simply published an statement clarifying that we will not make any more Kai Magazine collections.
This decision was taken long ago, after receiving some comments on usual supporters.
We will not do that mistake again. I just wanted to let everyone know that.

Regarding the tips and ways to improve the game, those have been discussed here:
https://www.msx.org/forum/msx-talk/software/highway-fighter-...

Thank you everyone for your feedback and your suggestions.
Please read that thread to see what can be improved and what cannot, and why.
Thanks!

The release date of the digital version was today but it will take a copule of days more.
I am trying to implement some of the suggestions we received.
Sorry for the delay!

Highway fighter is finished!
There is a new function: you can increase or decrease the engine and brake sound effects volume on the title screen by pressing f1 and f2 keys. (only in the title screen)
This is only useful for the fm+psg version (or music module + psg). On opl4 is not necessary.
The music module samples have been fixed (there was an issue and only some sounds were loaded) and it sounds quite good.
The fuel is a bit easier to pick.
Other improvements have been made.
Thank you everyone for your feedback!

Just wondering: how did you manage to pull it off with these huge 'sprites'? With MSX-Basic-kun?
