A new edition of openMSX and Catapult, its user-friendly GUI/launcher, has just been released. The most important changes in this new release:

  • A redesigned ROM database. This new format is supported by both openMSX 0.5.1 and the next blueMSX; other emulators are welcome to adopt it as well. The new database design is prepared to support disks in addition to ROMs.
  • Experimental support for GFX9000: the emulation is still far from complete, fast or bug free, but it can run a lot of GFX9000 software already
  • OSD (on-screen display) LEDs
  • A new mixer implementation improves the sound quality of PCM and PSG samples a lot
  • The "samples" and "frequency" settings can now be changed at run time
  • Various speed ups, especially for low end machines due to better frame skip
  • You can now use IPS patches to modify disk and ROM images as openMSX loads them into memory, without changing the images files
  • Extensions inside ZIP files are now used to guess the right file type
  • Debugging: enabled "cputrace" setting for normal builds as well
  • MSX device support: turboR DRAM (improved), MegaRAM Disk (new), 13 bit MSX-AUDIO DAC (improved), Sony HBI-55 (improved), Tetris II Special Edition dongle (improved), FM Stereo PAK (new)
  • Many improvements for Mac OS X, including bug fixes and more Mac-like key bindings
  • Added build support for OpenBSD and NetBSD
  • Updated C-BIOS to 0.20

Please keep in mind this are just the highlights, you can read the release notes for more details on the changes in this new release. You can download openMSX 0.5.1 here. Source and Win32 packages are available now, Debian packages will come soon. The openMSX review in the MSX Emulator Comparison will be updated in the near future.

Also available is the new openMSX forum. It's a lot prettier and easier to use than the forum on SourceForge, so we hope to see you all there!

great stuff! I hope opl4 emulation will be even better. I also hope Rensha Turbo will be fixed with this release of openmsx(-catapult).

Keep up the nice work!

Darq: if you want things fixed, the best thing you can do is inform us of the bugs, via of the methods described in the manual (IRC, bug tracker, mailing list). Just "hoping" that something is fixed is maybe a fun thing to do, but it doesn't help at all.... We are no supernatural beings that can 'smell' that there is a bug somewhere. We try to test a lot, but we can't find everything ourselves. We rely on users like you to report bugs as well.

Yes, and I thank you for that. I just feel a bit disappointed when we have just done a release and then you start mentioning bugs we don't even know about.... The bugs could already have been fixed if you'd have told us sooner.

The OSD fadeout looks neat... but is slowing things down a lot. btw: i believe it runs even a bit faster (better) than the previous version. playing opl4 music with turbo r emulation sounds a LOT better!

the capslock system still freaks out. someone once explained why the capslock freaks out in mbwave.

The renshaturbo problem is fixed indeed Smile

i didnt read any manual/readme or whatever, but can i disable OSD?

IIRC, the CAPS Lock problem is SDL related, and therefore not easily fixed in openMSX.

Sorry for the late reaction: WAV support has been greatly improved and now it is very reliable and the timing is almost perfect. I have tested my own WAV versions of megaROMs to load on SCC+ (128 KB upgrade) and it works fine.

I've tried all my WAV conversion tools and all the generated WAVs run smoothly on this new openMSX version. And, even more, the WAVs that don't work at the real MSX hardware also don't work either on openMSX. This is the sake of perfect emulation.

The only thing to be mentioned is that although WAV loading is working much better now, the WAV replaying makes some funny noises and the continuous beep of the MSX standard headers is not continuous. Anyway, I don't care about how it sounds if it LOADs!

I'll include this in the new forums.

hehhe, I just found this post and pitpans 'late' reaction. The good news is: we finally fixed that "WAV sounds weird" bug... Smile
