Joytest is an utility that allows you to test a lot of Human Interface Devices that can be connected to the MSX, either directly or by using adapters. It has recently been updated.

Besides some bugfixes and enhancements, the following devices are now supported as well:

  • Light gun (Plus-X Terminator Laser protocol)
  • Light pen (Sanyo MLP-001 and V9938 built-in)

Does some software or hardware actually use the V9938 light pen support?

I forgot to mention that were also some cometic improvements, like the "LEDs" for each button instead of asterisks, and the brighter corners on the borders.

Well... at least you can use it in BASIC... The BIOS can handle light pen connected to V9938 if such is available... Usually such are DIY projects, but some MSX models such as CPC-300 & CPC-400 have a build in connector for V9938 light pen.

According to the wiki, this is the list of the machines that have it:

  • AVT CPC-300
  • Bawareth Perfect MSX2
  • Daewoo CPC-300
  • Daewoo CPC-400
  • Daewoo CPC-400S
  • Sanyo MPC-27 probably
  • Sanyo MPC-X probably
  • Talent DPC-300
  • Wandy CPC-300

Sadly, the V9938 light-pen driver seems to be present only in the machines that have this hardware built-in. Probably it was a compile time option? But all MSX2/MSX2+ have the Sanyo light-pen interface driver embedded. It was removed only in the MSX Turbo-R.

Could some owner of an original Plux-X terminator light-gun please record a movie on how it behaves with this version of joytest? I could only do tests here using a Sega Light Phaser via gunSMS adapter.

Please check:

1) True hits on the square drawn in the middle of the screen
2) False hits on the letters of the screen
3) False hits when pointing to a CFL lamp (optional)

Recording a movie is important so I can check the timings of this light-gun.
