SpeedDemosArchive.com (SDA) is a web site about live speed demos of games. So finishing a game as fast as possible, without cheating, on a real system. No emulators allowed!

There are currently two MSX runs on the site. The most interesting one is of Konami's Vampire Killer. Gamer "Jaguar King" is finishing Vampire Killer in only 17:44 minutes, only slightly slower than the TAS and with some nice new tricks to boot. The video comes with a howto with instructions and tips too.

The other entry is a kind of joke, showing how to finish HAL's 1983 game Picture Puzzle in about 1 second.

How fast can you finish your favourite MSX game? Record it and perhaps your run will be published on SDA!

What are the new tricks you are talking about? The eternal time stop trick is one that was known back in the 80's if that is what you were referring to. Normally you use that trick already in level 3 but in a speedrun it is indeed faster to do in level 6. Other than that only the fact that you can stand there throwing knives at the Dracula picture was new. I always crouched there. The lesser known trick to lengthen the effects of the hourglass wasn't shown but that has no use if you use the eternal time stop trick.

And in case people didn't know it: you can activate the f5 continue option in this game just by inserting the game master in slot 2 (other methods to do that circulated the scene back then but those didn't work).

Nothing new under the sun, and personnally, I dislike TAS and speedrun videos, but that's just my opinion.

Oh indeed you already noted it in that article. Never saw it mentioned correctly. The trick of the longer use of the hourglass isn't in that article though: get it the regular way first. Then hit the 2nd hourglass over by hitting it with your whip and take it. Possible in level 2 and 3 for instance.

I also don't really like TAS or speedrun videos as much as regular ones. But I was hoping to see some new bugs or tricks. But aside from the slightly bigger hitbox than I expected nothing really new in the video.

I didn't know this 'longer time for hourglass' trick, that's amazing how some games have still unknown features after so many years ! Now, with an emulator, just use my cheat to freeze the enemies (and unfreeze them before coming to Dracula!)

You don't like speedeuns, but you do like cheating? I'd say a proper speedrun shows more skill than using cheats, and thus woulf be more interesting Smile Ah well, to each their own. Wink
