Since we last reported about the M file manager several releases have seen the light of day. An impressive list of new features and improvements have been added to this Norton Commander like file manager, with two key features standing out: a graphics viewer and an mp3/wma player with support for the One Chip MSX.

To top it off, a spectrum analyzer was built into the file manager's status bar, which you can see in action in this video. On turboR, LEDs can be used as volume meters, which you can see in this video.

As far as we were able to translate, the changelog since v1.6 looks as follows:

  • Program exit key can now be ESC or SHIFT+ESC
  • Added vertical alignment of menu window
  • Using the ] character before the path to a filename changes to the directory first before executing it
  • The INS key allows you to quickly use the current filename/directory when inserting text
  • The defaul sort order can now be changed in the .INI file
  • turboR leds can now act as volume meter (video)
  • Added support for the Hangul/Kanji FontPack cartridge
  • Added RAM Disk detection
  • A status line that shows the amount of selected files and its size
  • New command #CDD to change drive and directory
  • New commands #CPU0, #CPU1 and #CPU2 to change CPU mode on turboR
  • Support for selecting multiple files to be played in MPXP / IMSP
  • Improved memory access for Integrated IMS Player (but slower on Z80)
  • 10 more function key options, using combination with either SHIFT or CTRL
  • Faster loading of TSR module
  • The ".." dir is now always shown on top
  • Functionality of CTRL+S can now be changed
  • Fixed incorrect behaviour of CTRL+RETURN
  • Fixed a lockup issue when using a virtual FDD

The utility is available for any MSX running MSX-DOS2, but there now also is a dedicated executable for turboR that takes full advantage of the R800's multiplication routines.

Tell me more about the MP3/WMA player! Does it require additional hardware?

Yes it does, a JunSoft MPX cartridge - seems to be quite a nifty thing. Check out the Media Player eXtended MP3/MIDI player with 512KB Flash. The cartridge has been supported for a while in M file manager, but I'm probably not the only one who assumed the MPX Player was the Japanese MPX (Multiplay-X) player.

Thanks for the update! I like this file- manager very much.. Especially because it can copy subdirectories which contain files. I know xcopy can do the same Wink but this one is easy to use. I hope that there will be mouse support in the future as wel Wink

The latest version (v2.7) is great. I am surprised that nobody talks about it. Files and folders are displayed in alphabetical order very quickly.
