The first entry to the very first #msxdev compo comes from Aetherbyte. Their very first release for the MSX computer system ever is a platform game for MSX2 that supports MSX-MUSIC. The goal of the game sounds as simple as it is difficult: Destroy the demons, vanquish the undead, and escape the inferno... or become another bloodstain on the wall.. Sadly, due to the deadline closing in, the game consists of only one level. There are however plans to release a version with more versions in the future.

I particularly like the large 'sprites', you rarely see those on MSX. Very nice! Only Monmon Monster comes to mind...

But IIRC Monmon Monster was just using HW sprites, here sprites are SW and of noticeable size, without loss of frame rate.

I checked out the movie (I'll have to try the real game later), and I'm impressed! Great graphics, and lots of attention to detail (like the beating heart in the status bar). The only point of feedback I have is that the main character animations look a bit weird especially when walking up or down the stairs.

Can't wait till the game is completed, great job!

Yeah, I agree, the beating heart as health indicator is a nice detail.

It reminded me a bit of Rastan Saga, style wise.

or better, it recalls how Rastan Saga could have been if properly coded ;-)

Looks fun! And the intro theme is just hellish marvellous! Evil
The bone-swinging animation and jumping certainly seems a bit like Rastan Saga, but not in a bad way.

Actually, it also reminds me of http://www.generation-msx.nl/msxdb/softwareinfo/1643 (Heroes of the Lance)

Has anyone successfully made it out of level 1 yet? I'm curious about how people like the tune that plays when you do. Smile

Rastan was a definite inspiration for the art in the game right down to the goofy walking style.

Glad people seem to like how it has turned out so far. I intend to get back to it after finishing a PC Engine project that now needs my attention since the #msxdev contest has concluded.

I like so much this game that I've made a review including a map and MP3's :

(English version) : http://www.msxblue.com/?page_id=8468

(French version) : http://www.msxblue.com/?page_id=8453

For the musics, here's my Top 4 :

1. Inferno Theme
2. Inferno End
3. Inferno Prison
4. Inferno Game Over

I can't wait for the full version of the game ... In my opinion, the best game of #msxdev Compo 2012 ! :)

That is horribly slow. And could have been a little faster...
