MSXdev'12 - Teodoro No Sabe Volar announced

Two weeks before the deadline the second entry for the MSXdev'12 challenge has been announced. It's the game Teodoro No Sabe Volar, a co-op production by two Spanish developers Retroworks (known from Genesis: Dawn of a new day) and Dimension Z (known from JumpinG). Teodoro No Sabe Volar is a platform game for 32kB ROM for MSX1, an earlier preview video can be found here.

The game is fully finished, the last steps being completing the manual and designing a sticker for the cartridge. Work on the CPC Amstrad version is also progressing well and should be available soon.

The deadline for MSXdev'12 closes on December 15th. After the deadline the MSX community can choose the winner of this year's compo through a poll on the MSXdev forums. Since there's no prizes to be won, the winner will gain eternal praise and fame.

Gee, for one minute I thought this was a 10 liner entry!
Congratulations, I love that style of graphics!

Nah, it's not a tenliner entry, but I admit it can be a bit confusing when there's 3 challenges running at the same time and all of them ending this month Smile

Cool. The early-vid shows a real nice project already. Graphics are great, altho kinda confusing in gameplay.
new rule for dev'13: only English language may be used. so every-one understands your game.

Agree, I'm Spanish but I think they always should consider make the English versions too...

About the confusion, just for fun, if you look at MRC Spotlight, when it's at #1, you can see three news posts:
1st one TENLINER xxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxx #11
2nd one xxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxx MSXDEV'12 xxxxxxx
3rd one TENLINER xxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxx #13

11, 12 and 13 on the same "view" Smile

the graphics are good, except the main charather. Expecially considering this sprite is made of three sprites.

There are versions for the Speccy and even CPC? Then a version for the MSX2 too would be almost mandatory, wouldn't it? Wink

Why? this game is doable on msx1.
Gfx (excluding main char ) are good.

@PingPong

Have a look at the CPC version graphics and tell me you wouldn't want those beautiful colorful graphics, but at the MSX2 resolution. :)

The graphics looks nice, especially the intro screen is just wow. The gameplay on the video looks fast and smooth. And I think the backstory is very cool and cute. Smile

Oh hey, but I agree with sd_snatcher.

@sd_snatcher: I'd like THAT speed. But by now i just played on PAL MSX1, so 50hz. I'm sure at 60hz it will be better. (and 50hz is still playable, no pain)
Don't think a MSX2 version is necessary. Unless it adds new stuff, appart from gfx. But well, if it comes, it's welcome.

They need us in printing the carton, manuals, also the sticker cartridge.

And electronics manufacturing cartridges. Our idea is to have them finished by March.

Sorry for my Bad English.

Congratulations on the great game. I finished it just now and I like it a lot.

Normaly I don't like the spanish genre (precise timed jumping and monotome enemy movements) but this time it wasn't really bothering me.

Great overal pollish!

We'll try to have the cartridges ready for the next RetroMadrid fair (main day: 9th of March), and getting them on the shop shortly after.

It seems it can only be done via a 'free' download manager (ilivid.exe)... fantastic. I don't need that crap! Can you guys please reconsider hosting this?

I have downloaded the game package successfully without use a download manager.
I have clicked on game's link, then in next window I clicked on "Direct download" button (the only one blue button), in next window I entered the captcha and finally press "Download file". the download began without problems.

Playing it now. It's a really fun game, actually. I like how your jump upgrades so you can get to new areas. And once again [WYZ] delivered an excellent soundtrack.

Got it from hap, thanks. It's a pretty good game, indeed!
- great graphics
- simple but good atmosphere in music
- pretty well polished with animations

downsides:
- unforgiving collision detection
- you need to walk quite a lot past rooms you already walked past, which are annoying (lots of places to die)
- I understand it's a competition game so not too large, but it definitely has potential to be made much larger

This game's getting even more fun when it progresses. It's really recommended!
I agree with Manuel that the collision detection is a bit harsh, but it doesn't make it unplayable or anything.

So is John, the more you progress through the game you like and you can not stop playing until I finished.

Have already used the hook?

You used the Strike Breaker?

Excellent gameplay. albeit, indeed, somewhat short.
But great, all together. I didn't have this amount of fun since, well, Corona Encantada.
I love it. You guys did a great job. One of the best MSX(1) games I've played in years.

I did some testings. I have some good and bad news:

Good news:
- The game passes the Acid1Test.
- The game runs on the Acid2Test, which is already a great achievement. Congratulations!
- It passed on many of the most feared machines: Victor HC-95, Sharp Hotbit. (*1)

Bad news:
- The game fails to run on the dreaded Sony HB-F500 (*1)
- There's no sound while running on Acid2Test

Those are bad news for me too: I have to analyze why the game passes on Acid1Test and still fails on the Sony HB-F500.

*1: emulated on openMSX

I forgot to mention one of its virtues:

- The timing routines supports turbo properly. The game runs at a steady speed regardless of the CPU speed.

Hi sd_snatcher,

I usually create games using calls to the MSX BIOS, since this is the way that more support is accomplished with all msx.
I would like to know how to perform these tests, in order to realize them in future productions.

A greeting.

P.S. you can pass for the contest to vote for your favorite, or make any comments.

I'm that glad you like to follow the MSX coding guidelines! I'll then write a howto wiki entry on this topic, so anyone who's interested will also be able to perform such tests.

I use those same procedures to test my newer patches/enhancements.
