Repro Factory MSX shop announced

by Metalion on 22-11-2014, 18:59
Topic: Websites
Languages:

After manufacturing and selling some cartridges for the MSX community (Uridium, Muffie's Tutankam), Eric Boez has decided to take his work to a new level, by launching a website dedicated to help the MSX developers share and sell their work. On this website, Repro Factory developers can manufacture and sell their creations (hardware or software) through the website.

There is a growing catalog of 17 cartridges including games, FM sound extensions, slot expanders, IDE interfaces and more. The site is available in English, French and Spanish.

There's a lot of interesting hardware on there, such as the Beer IDE and the slot expander. It's hard to believe what people have managed to achieve. I wonder if the Beer cartridge can also run ROM cartridge image files? Now I just need an MSX computer to use them with!

will they be able to make reproduction game carts? many other formats have this, nes, snes, megadrive etc.
They obviously have no value , but would be great way for players to try the unobtainable high priced originals Smile

BEER IDE is a mas storage Device.
You can directly execute Rom up to 32K with the appropriate romloader.
For upper rtom size, you need a flash cartridge or extra memory.

CX5Mer, don't go for a solution with which you can only load ROMs up to 32K. You'll be extremely limited in what you can play. Most (MSX2) games are 128K or 256K. As ericb59 says, better get a flash cartridge.

CX5Mer, if you don't have nothing to load games buy a Mega SCC+SD (all in one).
BEER IDE is for people who already have a flashrom or SRAM and want faster and bigger storage than floppy.

Unfortunately, my post in this topic about what I can afford seems to have disappeared. The Beer IDE costs €52.50, while the cheapest Megaflashrom costs €99. I've been trying to get back into MSX, but at the moment I don't even own an MSX computer, only emulators. I've been trying to buy an MSX2 computer, but without much luck. I think that about €100 is my limit. After paying €100 for an MSX2 computer, I wouldn't want to pay another €99 for a Megaflashrom.

Are you trying to tell me that the Beer IDE won't work without a Megaflashrom?

BEER IDE will work fine, it just has nothing to do with (flash) ROM emulation. It’s an IDE interface, to connect mass storage (hard drives and compact flash cards), like disk drives. MegaFlashROM SCC+ SD is a cartridge which combines many functions in a single cartridge, among which mass storage using SD cards, and ROM emulation using internal flash memory.

So, in that case can I at least use it with a CF card to simulate an MSX disk drive, run disk game images, as well as MSX Disk BASIC and MSX-DOS?

I haven’t played games from harddisk that much myself actually (aside from those Sunrise games which were explicitly supporting it), but I do know it’s a bit more complicated than you describe above.

Though hard disks are similar and many software will work both from disk and harddisk, games distributed on disk (.dsk images) often depend on sector-based access and such, which needs to be emulated to work properly. There are dsk loaders which work on every machine, and there are also dsk loaders with hardware support which have higher compatibility.

I’m not sure if BEER IDE has hardware disk emulation support... Maybe someone else knows? I also don’t really know how well the dsk loaders without hardware support work.

Perhaps you can tell me if the BEER IDE can at least save and reload MSX BASIC programs using a CF card. At least that would make it worth buying. It could be a cheap way of upgrading an MSX1 or MSX2 computer to disk, or a way to avoid having lots of floppy disks for an MSX2 computer which already has a built in diskdrive from cluttering up my flat.

By Grauw

Ascended (8382)

Grauw's picture

28-11-2014, 19:07

Yeah it absolutely can Smile. In the end it’s just a big diskdrive. Whether it works on MSX1, I don’t know, it depends on the interface. I know MegaFlashROM SCC+ SD can, but I doubt the BEER IDE has Nextor-DOS2 (regular DOS2 does not work on MSX1), so you’ll be limited to DOS1 (no subdirectories and 112 files limit iirc), if it works at all. Someone else needs to answer that question.

By ericb59

Paladin (859)

ericb59's picture

28-11-2014, 19:44

Absolutly right. BeerIDE use DOS1 and is compatible with MSX1 with 64K of RAM.
With BeerIDE you can do all you can do with a floppy disk. But it's faster, and you can store bigger files on it.
You can manage multiple partitions etc...

Great! So if I bought a cheap MSX1 computer, then I could use this with it, to experience a real MSX computer with at least some kind of disk drive, which I never had before. I suppose there are no Quick Disk (QD) drives around anymore, or any disks to use with them. I am currently looking at some MSX1 as well as MSX2 computers. I think I will probably also contact Bas, tell him what I'm looking for and try to pay a deposit in advance, then pay the rest off before receiving the computer, which I hope will have a separate keyboard.

Yes it's based on Sharksym SD 2.2, but not include all features.
The purpose of this SD Cart. is to be use as "simple" mass storage system for MSX.
Just in the same way of a BeerIde. Simple to set-up, with PC<-> MSX file transfer possibilities.
as bonus, Floppy-drive emulation with DSK file works, but with no guaranty, as it's write on the attached documentation.

@podatron : which compatibility do you hope ?

After 6 days SLOTEXPANDER sold out.
Wow.
I am interested because my goal is to use simultaneously fmpac and musicmodule on nms 8245 slot 2 while slot 1 is used for megaflashrom.
The questions are:
1. Do you plan to make a new batch of slotexpander?
2. What about a 2x slot expander? How much would it cost?
3. Would it work with fkpac with sram and music module?

Regards

I think that Repro Factory should make a MIDI interface and/or a copy of a Yamaha SFG-01 or better still SFG-05 FM sound module, but I don't know if this is possible. I'm going to try and make some FM music on my "new" Philips VG8235 MSX2 when I get it in a few days from now. Eventually, I remade and recorded all the tunes I'd originally written on my old CX5M (which I lost by failing to remove it from my first flat) in a professional recording studio using the software Logic Pro on a Mac Pro with Intel XEON CPU. Some of the instruments were specifically FM sounding. Before I lost my CX5M, I also got a Casio CZ3000 synth, which I tried to control using another computer, but I never managed to do much with it, so I only really know about Yamaha FM synthesis.

Considering what hally and his pards achieved with YM2151 and some OKI samples player with .MDX format, see Kamishimo records, it would be very interesting what could MSX respond to top Sharp X1's and X68000's and some others Yamaha DX keyboards' music.

of course you can , It possible to put between 40-50 roms in 1024K
so in 2048 K you can put up to 100 roms in one cartridge.
But, as there is no tool to do that, you have to creta the multirom in assembler.
