ArrowPAD, the ultimate gamepad for MSX

ArrowPAD, the ultimate gamepad for MSX

Who doesn't remember those summer afternoons in the 80s playing Track & Field or Nemesis series by Konami? Without a doubt, unforgettable memories but also a time of risk since many of those games were very demanding with the keyboard and even more in the hands of a child. Since then, many of us realized the advantages of the keyboard against the joystick which was clumsy and ineffective depending on the game.

More than 30 years later, our machines are still suffering the old failures and although we have the necessary means and knowledge to practically repair all the MSX keyboards, the spare parts are not always available (membranes) or we don't achieve a satisfactory or durable result.

With this premise, the Spanish user Daniel Padilla decided to take a step forward and extend the lifetime of our keyboards. For that purpose, he designed ArrowPAD, a device that, unlike a conventional gamepad, it uses normal keys from a keyboard. On top of that, the cursor layout chosen is the same as Philips MSX keyboards. Bravo!

As can be seen in the pictures the finish could not be more professional taking care of every detail. The body is made of machined aluminum with a total weight of 500 g. The front sticker offers two different color schemes matching with Sony (red) and Panasonic (orange/black) MSX computers. The connection cable features a classic DE-9 connector. And that's not all, the packaging will be in line with the device. In a word, impressive!

The first batch of ArrowPAD will go on sale coinciding with the next MSX meeting in Málaga (Spain) scheduled for the 3rd of September of 2022. The estimated price is 70 €. If you are interested, please fill in this form.

Looks great!
P.S. I wish it also has Running Naked in a Field of Flowers an autofire if possible.

Looks awesome. How much travel do the keys have? Some games require me to be fast.

Hi, thanks. The keys are regular Kaihl mechanical switches. Red type for the triggers and brown for the directional buttons.
Distance travel to activation is 1.9mm. Total travel length is 4 mm.

Ordered.

I've always been dreaming of a controller like this one, even if my all time favorite controller for shumps is the VG-8235 cursor pad, which is bit different. Can't wait to try it !

I'd love to have one of these, but with the more modern cursor key layout instead. ┴

Looking good, I have a couple of NES Hypershot controllers that I need to convert to work with MSX, it seems a simple rewire job from the inside of the controller. I'd say the NES controllers are not a patch on the MSX Hypershot controller. The latter being larger with better buttons, but then they are hard to find Sad

I was foreseeing. Since June I drastically save my energy consumption. I even have cheaper bills than before despite the prices which have increased a lot.

Nice, but I prefer my ergonomic gamepad layout.
It is a natural way of placing your arms and fingers. If anyone will produce this layout, be my guest!

If this padilla guy answer e-mails, it would be very better... otherwise, there's no point in putting something up for sale if he doesn't communicate with his potential customers.

My arrowpad arrived today.

I find the build quality to be really good, and it came in a nice box as well. I went for the Panasonic color scheme.

It's quite heavy and sits well on the desk. Using it is very reminiscent of playing on the keyboard of an NMS8250.

I'm using it on an SX-2. Playing games with the ArrowPad is definitely a step up from using a PS/2 PC keyboard.

Aleste plays really nice with this pad as well as it's now much more convenient to save up sub-weapon ammo.
