Finding a hardcopy of any MSX books is hard these days. A copy of The MSX Red Book, about MSX computers and how they work, is extremely hard to come by. A new digital dynamic version is now available online.

The aim of the MSX Red Book is to provide a description of the standard MSX hardware and software at a level of detail sufficient to satisfy that most demanding of users, the machine code programmer. It is not an introductory course on programming and is necessarily of a rather technical nature.

MRC user oraculo666 decided to make the text version already available on the web a bit easier to read and ended up creation a code version of it. It includes a Markdown text version of the book, hyperlinks all through the text, illustrations in SVG format and source code.

The earlier version was converted to ASCII format by Hans Otten 2001

Very informational book, I’ll be sure to read it to gain a deeper understanding of the BIOS!

Just coders, please heed the warning from the book;

“This chapter gives a functional description of every recognizably separate routine in the ROM BIOS. Special attention is given to the "standard" routines. These are documented by Microsoft and guaranteed to remain consistent through possible hardware and software changes. The first few hundred bytes of the ROM consists of Z80 JP instructions which provide fixed position entry points to these routines. For maximum compatibility with future software an application program should restrict its dependence on the ROM to these locations only.” [0000H-0189H]
