Darkstone, one of the Dutch MSX groups present at the MSX fair in Bussum this year, have announced to send in a puzzle game called Beez to the MSXdev'06 competition. On the MSXdev website you can have a look at a screenshot of the title screen of this game, which is the first puzzle game to be announced for MSXdev'06. Darkstone previously released Bounce Mania and an xMas demo on MSX.

With this announcement, a total of 9 MSX1 games have already been announced to be released during this competition, one of which (Operation Wolf) has already been finished. On the MSXdev website you can find out more about all these projects, and on how to join the competition yourself.

Posting another reply rather than editing does do good to your yearly activity stats however. ^_^

I figured so, since you were requesting sc1 output last week..

Wouldn't you want to use scr2 instead (and ask some help to make these scr2 things work in (I assume) basic?)

i love to use sc1 becourse lots of pages easy fast gfx in basic
but polka need to be upgrated

old polka won't be upgraded, new polka might have sc1 export (sc1 and sc2/4 do differ a small bit)

btw, with scr2 I meant scr2 in patternmode, not gfx-mode. So, you could have equally fast screen build-ups, but it requires some poke to set scr2 in patternmode from Basic..

@Wolf: I hope it wil take a while. That way my efforts in creating my own sc2 tool was not in vain..... Tongue

I've no idea, atm I don't really need it for our 'dev game. And I created some small new tools for unsupported things like sprite-overlays (one of viejo's wet dreams ^_^) for certain images, as well as a genuine bmp-sc2 converter (has its own colorapproximationchooserthingamabob), so a few of those gaps are already filled. The problem is that I want to do it *good* this time, another problem is that I'm its most fanatic user, so I'm the one inventing ideas on a daily base, as long as I keep doing that, there's no telling how big the tool should be. Thankyou OO.
That's the advantage of the old procedural B+ days.., much more spontanity, as long as projects don't exceed 4000 lines. ^_^ Polka1 was really done in 4 days orso, including 1 for calculating/coding/designing the buttons.

@wolf: Graphical buttons are a pain for B+ indeed. I chose not to bother and just use the canvas mousebutton event. (Oh yeah and your images Wink)

Funny thing is that I did the same with the bmp2sc2 converter thing. Although I used another aprouch. I let myself draw in free mode and the tool tells me afterwards where i violate the 2 color rule. It work best for free drawing bigger GFX. Only the retouching and details are done the polka way

I had some good fun converting titlescreens of MSXdev06 entries (and konami's). The sprite overlay is a common used technique. Even for games you wouldn' t supspect in the first place. No way that the TNI screenshot is MSX1.Cool (example: retrodevelopment.wordpress.com)

The freehand drawing and convert/reduce afterwards is a common method, I wouldn't feel comfy with it however. I really like Polka's "anticipate on the native format"-approach, just filling the VRAM the way it's done, esp. in our game foreground and background is extremely important, and with converters you'll have a random bag o' swapped colors and you'll keep swapping them back (with the mighty [<->] button) until you drop. Polka2 will follow this tradition, but it might include those image importers with auto colorfinder/chooser/etc. (is there a name for this procedure?).

btw, this is not the first time a random topic is hijacked for polka1-polka2 talk ^_^ tsk tsk tsk!
