We're halfway the month again, a few days late, all the more reason to change the poll at once! Prior to presenting the new poll, let's have a look at the outcome of the Game hero poll from May/June. What kind of species do you prefer for an MSX game's lead character? After 652 votes, here is the result:

  1. Man 21.78 %
  2. Woman 15.18%
  3. Animal 13.04%
  4. Undefined entity 13.04%
  5. Supernatural 12.88%
  6. Mechanical/artificial 12.27%
  7. Extra-Terrestrial 11.81%

Let's get straight towards the next poll. This month is more special than other months. Needless to say, this month we celebrate that 25 years ago the MSX standard was conceived. Some people celebrate this by submitting an entry for the MEGA Challenge, others organize a special event, others will probably turn on their dusty old MSX1 instead of running an emulator, to once more insert a good-old Konami game.

How about this: if you were to open a bottle o' wine with a famous personality from MSX history to celebrate the MSX anniversary at a terrace in a sunny peaceful village in the French Provence, who would that person be? Kay Nishi, the great mind behind the standard? Bill Gates from Microsoft, who has made MSX-BASIC and MSX-DOS (and who may have an funny anecdote or two to share about Steve Ballmer), or perhaps Hideo Kojima, the great mind behind the landmark MSX2 game Metal Gear? How about Martos (and don't try to convince us that you don't know Martos)? Or, especially for the Dutch: MCM icon and chairman of the pigs 'n ducks zoo: Wammes Witkop? Or maybe there is someone else who is even more interesting than these five? Take your pick, they are buying!

If you have an idea for an interesting poll, send your idea to poll@msx.org and we will consider running your suggestion for a month.

1) In Russia we had our own famous megarom crackers (Orekhov & Ryazansky), so Martos is unknown there.
Talk about Leonid Baraz and his TOR, Igor Bocharov and his ND System, and russian MSX lover will smile and bring a bottle of vodka.

2) Marat Fayzullin (fms) is my hero - his fMSX took me back to MSX world in 1995.

Besides beer or wine, I'd like to get my hands on the stuff which the composer of the Fray soundtrack must've been smoking. Smile

It's the production tools, really. Because no one has done similar music here in the scene may suggest that the difference is related to us (persons), but we've been using MB, which is far from capable of what Microcabin could with their own tools.

That's exactly why I'm considering using Oracle. Smile

BTW, even if we did have the tools, we'd still need the mindset and expertise to compose something like that. Wink

That mindset will come automagically when the right features are there. It's all too easy to say: "a good artist doesn't blame his tools", but that's rubbish, a painter with a worn-out bristle will rightfully complain about it, and an MB user will rightfully complain about its lack of features.

True, true.

I guess most MSX composers noticed how, while their skills increased, somewhere down the line MoonBlaster just wouldn't suffice anymore.

But IMHO it's a combination between ability and tools.
