A bit more than a month ago, the MSX1 game development competition MSXdev'06 was launched. With more than 7 months to go to the deadline, a lot has been announced already. Time for an overview:

  • Brain Eaters - a new MSX development team, featuring Alfonso D.C. (Dioniso) and WYZ - are to release a shoot'em-up game called TT Virus. The game is the successor of T Virus, which was released in MSXdev'04
  • TNI are to release a platform shooting adventure called Cyberware: Chapter IV ~ Katarsis episode II ~. The game is to be the first chapter of a story which has been worked on ever since 1994
  • XL2S Entertainment, who won MSXdev'05 with their Vampire Killer-inspired platform game The Cure are to join with another platform game called Lux. The game is to create a new gaming genre on its own, which is -according to the developers- platform-action-adventure-fun. As if that isn't enough, the team is also to join with Dash! a game inspired by Boulderdash. Certainly, both games will be highly anticipated
  • Last years' runner-ups Infinite, who impressed the MSX community time and time again with such releases as Universe: Unknown and their 4-motion demo's, are to release a platform game, on which they took care to reveal as little information as possible
  • Karoshi Corporation are to release Malaika - Prehistoric quest, a platform game. Perhaps needless to say, one of the Karoshi team members is Robsy Petrus (Pitpan), founder of the already legendary MSXdev challenges
  • Cas Cremers, Jesús Pérez Rosales and Philip Pera are the three main judges of MSXdev'06 and are to decide who is going to win the MSX FS-A1GT turboR computer. To find more about this jury, you can check the related announcement over here

On the MSXdev website you can already have a small impression of all games that have been announced already, revealing often impressive titlescreens of each game. You can also find out how you can support the competition by offering prizes for sub-contests. With this many projects already announced, it looks like MSXdev'06 is -like its predecessors- going to take MSX1 game development to the next level once again.

IMHO
msxdev needs prizes and sponsors.

Why not trying to rise money from advertising on the msxdev web page?

You could pay new prizes with the income.

uhm.. and who would you suggest to advertise? Tongue

advertisement means: invest to promote a commercial product. Name me an organisation who makes enough profit on MSX to be able to invest a bit of money to afvertise a product of which we already know of, due the information-vaccuum MRC .. Tongue

And ofcourse, that refers to msx-organisations.. Big smile

Let's take commercial non-msx ones.. are they interested in 1000-max visitors who really are there for the information?

I think the small penny that arrives at MRC for those google ads describes my point a bit, and MRC is a relativily huge portal Tongue

So, uhm, bottomline: prizes really have to come from within the scene, out of charity/support_initiatives. We might see a future where these current modern msx users get into serious game-programming for the JP market, figures could go up to x000 copies you sell.. or more! Once that happens, then we could think about serious sums o' donations!

Since the beginning, indeed, only one extra info has appeared somewhere on the MRC forum : SCC sound ! LOL!

ARTRAG: It would be difficult to organize a thing like that and I personally doubt that the impact that the contest has worldwide could atract a single advertiser Smile. Of course it would be cool to have more prizes to offer: anyway I think a TurboR is still a very nice prize. On the other hand, we still hope to get more donors before the contest end Wink

Huey: Any contribution will be appreciated, the big and the small ones!. It seems like that record could be a pretty cool prize for the "funniest game" or something Wink. BTW, /me looking for a scan of that rare item too.
