Hate it or love it (just like the grumpy Dr. Pill), but the MSXdev'09 competition is now completely over. Months of hard work have now come to an end with the announcement of the winning entry: Dr. Pill. After receiving this news, the doctor himself just sent us a telegram with the words: "Muhahaha, epic! Now take some cyanide please!"

The organizers are certainly satisfied with the quality of all the games that have entered this edition. No matter the rank or the points of an entry, joining the contest is the right MSX-spirit, let's continue that wave of inspiration! Now, the ranking of MSXdev'09:

  1. Dr.Pill, by Infinite
  2. Menace, by The New Image
  3. Stray Cat, by Imanok
  4. British Bob, by Relevo Videogames
  5. Retaliot, by Video Hazard
  6. Cow Abductors, by Paxanga Software
  7. X0rz, by Vampier & Hydragon
  8. Castle Tomb, by AG Software
  9. Plumber, by AG Software

Dr. Pill has been highlighted as the most original game for its clever and catchy concept, and as the game with the best music, due to its really nice soundtrack. Dr.Pill and Retaliot share the medal for the best graphics. Dr.Pill contains the best music and has the most original concept. Menace features the best gameplay and British Bob is the most polished game. There was also the new MSX1+ category, which awards bonus material compared to the MSXdev specifications, usually these include sound chips, video chips and such. This year's MSX1+ prize goes to Dr.Pill, based on music, MSX2 palette and 50/60Hz choice.

And with that, MSXdev'09 has come to an end. Long live MSXdev'10! But this time it will be without Jon Cortazar (viejo_archivero, RELEVO), who not only was one of the driving forces behind the MSXdev editions so far, but also a regular to join with an entry (in previous years as Karoshi Corp.). His MSX time has been drastically reduced and he wants to focus all his spare MSX time to develop games under his new brand RELEVO Videogames. So now it will be up to Benoît Delvaux (mars2000you) and Sjoerd Lammertsma (bodyhammer) to keep the MSXdev fire burning: stay tuned for news regarding MSXdev'10!

Congrats for all!

I am really sorry but I didn´t understand the meaning of the expression "No respect towards the MSX standard". What did the judges mean? Some light, please!

Amazing results...
Dr Pill, as I said, was the best professional looking game. Looks "expensive"! Smile Not my type of game, but that's just my personal taste.
And Menace:

# Gameplay (!!) Smooth controls, game plays perfect

And the name is great! Just like the DMA Design Amiga Menace. Oh wait, what DMA design is doing nowadays? Maybe the best selling game of all times?
Congratulations Bifi and GuyveR800...

And to my Spanish fellows:

# 46/60 · Musics/SFX Nice music.
# Only 2 songs in the levels and they start to irritate after a while.

That's really quite a game. Besides not being original, there's always ppl having fun playing that kind of game. Me included.
PLZ, just change the music and it will be perfect!! Smile

And I'm glad to see that Vampier was not last.

# After a while of playing en error message abruptly spoiled my fun. It contains partial joystick controls.

Plumber guys... You're only last because my Marial Attack submission was not accepted... Smile

"No respect towards the MSX standard". What did the judges mean?mild respect: assuming devices are at fixed ports (eg. VDP at $98 and $99), instead of looking them up in the BIOS. IMO not much of a problem, but it doesn't comply to the standard.

no respect: mild respect + too fast VRAM writes causing severe glitches and/or lockups on most MSX1s, and buggy RAM search causing lockups on some MSX1s. Dr.Pill was lucky not to receive many penalty points. Hannibal

I would have expected a better placement for Retaliot by Video Hazard.
I think that that horizontal scrolling is simply unique.
Maybe the difficulty is a bit too high and sprites look a bit static

Muffie is now banned from MRC & Apple.
He's now coding for Windows Phone 7.
First release should be Marial Attack!

He tried to upload an homophobic application. I think I can't give further details here about what it was.
Anyway, it's a full year BAN. Meanwhile, just Microsoft. What about Marial?
