The Spanish game developer Relevo Videogames has firm roots in the MSX community - as you can read in this very detailed profile in our ever expanding MSX Wiki. Their latest release is not an MSX game, but an ASCII-art game that simply breathes pure MSX and Gradius spirit.

Accompanied by PSG-flavored music from well known MSX composer [WYZ], Battle for Asciion is a full-featured shoot'em-up that is heavily inspired by the Gradius series. In nothing more than a 80x24 ASCII matrix you are to fly your starfighter through an ongoing series of attacks of enemies. Of course, you will be able to power-up your normal, laser and wide shot weapons. For added retro-spirit, you can switch scanlines on and off, or adjust the color scheme between green, amber and white. Well worth playing!

I'm torturing the "Z" key like there's no tomorrow, but won't get past the title screen? Question
Nice music, anyway. Smile

EDIT: it suddenly worked after the intro text was shown. Nice! Big smile

@john - perhaps you need to (mouse) click on the game screen first, to give it focus?

I think my computer is way too slow to execute it properly. Crying
Too bad, because I can still see that it's cool.

It seems to fit in a 80x24 text screen
why not porting it to msx?

Indeed, the display is restricted to an 80x24 characters array ;-). But I feel that the time of porting b4a to MSX2 will be best spent if focused on a more MSX dedicated game instead. Anyway, thnx for reporting although it is not an MSX product!

What did you use to code it?
Maybe a C port could be easy and on r800 it could work at reasonable speed
Just an idea

Nah, Action Script 3, handy for web, desktop and mobile, but not that nice for other kind of ports like an MSX2 one...

ARTRAG: I am pretty sure an MSX2 can handle it too. With some updates to the IOTZM core, it can run at a reasonably speed (talking about 20fps or better)... the point is: would it worth the job? This shooter will not add much to the MSX shooter catalog, which is brilliant, except the fact it has been done in text mode...

There can never bee too many shooters for MSX. I think an MSX port of the game (and its music!) would be absolutely awesome.

/me likes!

Nice retro style and a nice soundtrack as well!

Hmm... I'd almost feel like giving it a try to port this to HTML5/CSS3, just for fun Smile

IMHO it is worth a port to msx. It has a unique retro style.
And with scc it could even have pcm sfx.

ASCII graphics + powerfull soundtrack is what makes this game so special. It's like a game from an 80's sci-fi film!
I also think an MSX version would be awesome.
