MSXFiles discovered a little gem of an anime movie recently, featuring none other than our favorite penguin Pentaro portraying its main character. In the CBS/Sony production Penguin's memories - Shiawase monogatari (also known as Penguin's Memory: A Tale of Happiness). As you all known Pentaro is the main character of Antarctic Adventure (1984) and Penguin Adventure that grew out to become a popular mascotte of Konami and even somewhat the MSX platform, making guest appearances in many other Konami titles. (can you name them all?)

The storyline, as found on IMDB: Returning from the Delta War, Mike Davis is left traumatized and adrift in life. Leaving his home town, he eventually winds up in Lake City and takes a quiet job in the local library. There, he meets Jill, a young woman with dreams of being a professional singer. She's already involved with a young surgeon practicing at her father's hospital, but she finds herself attracted to the withdrawn Mike. As she falls in love with him, she tries to break through the wall of sadness Mike has built around herself, but outside forces are conspiring to keep the two lovers apart.

A scene that is likely to put a smile on your face takes place in a late night club, where Mike drinks his sorrows away whilst playing the slot machine. Hmm, where have we seen that before, eh? The full film can currently be watched on YouTube, without subtitles. More than 100 minutes of Pentaro anime awaits you!

It's not really clear if Mike = Pentarou, or if one is based on the other instead (I'm thinking the latter).
Mike was also a mascot for Suntory beer, and in Penguin Adventure Pentarou sometimes thinks of beer when finishing a stage, which is very likely a reference. The gambling machine also fits in nicely in that theory.
One of the later Parodius games features Pentarou with an armored vest, which is even more obvious.
Smile

My guess is that (someone at) Konami changed the Penguin character to look more like Mike after seeing that movie.

That does make sense, as the timeline also is Antarctic Adventure -> Penguin's Memory -> Penguin Adventure. Anyone happen to have some more background information on this?

http://tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pmwiki.php/Anime/PenguinMemories - does state that Konami in fact produced the anime and that Mike was later renamed to Pentaro. In the 'tropes': Suntory stop using him in their commercials not because of what happened later with the infamous Joe Camel, but because Suntory did not what to pay Konami any more royalties for the characters.

So, basically this is where the unnamed penguin from Antarctic Adventure evolves from Mike to the Pentaro/Pentarou we all know and love. Nice piece of history if you ask me ;).

I think the internet is a bit vague and inconsistent regarding Konami's penguin (not just in this particular case). Wink

The tv tropes statement makes me wonder a few things:
1) If it were a Konami character all along, I'd expect some reference to them in the movie. Is there one?
2) Is there any Konami production prior to the movie where the penguin actually looks like Mike?

BTW according to this topic, if someone wants to watch the Hinotori movie that MSX game version belongs to, check these videos (6 parts). The ending song is the popular MSX tune, very recommended Wink :

@TheKid: if you also mean it the other way around there are some others too. In the konami games collections there were some adverts for some Konami anime. If i remember correctly the movie Do all dogs go to heaven also has Konami in the credits. And they have some of the rights to Yu gi oh (but don't think the anime itself).
