Who cares, msx.org is pretty well indexed throughout Smile And the title might raise a bit of curiosity? I feel like it's tradition already Wink

The URL is inconsistent though. The previous was short-news, this is shrt-nws.
The previous one is easy to find if you're looking for 'short news' (thanks to that slug I figure) Smile The introductory text (first paragraph) matters as well.

Those 'big robots' are called mechs btw ;)

Well, no shit they're different URLs. If they'd be the same URL you'd be unable to hyperlink to a specific post, and because the new post would overwrite the old post anyway. You don't have file folders with two identical filenames either, right?

In terms of content (including titles), this site's had better times, that's for sure. Sad

MRC staff, I appreciate all the time and effort you put in. I remember just a few years ago that a lot of news wasn’t posted in a timely manner or at all, and certainly didn’t have such nice artwork. Thanks to all your efforts the site is now in much better shape!

Thanks! I listened to this on Spotify and thought it was enjoyable. The interview with Wammes starts at approximately 41:00. Manuel gets mentioned by Wammes, but unfortunately he didn’t tell why Matra closed their business.

I find Wammes' story that MSX got so popular in the Netherlands solely because a ship's cargo full of MSX computers was put on the Dutch market for dumping prices hard to confirm. Does anyone know if there's any credence to this?

I found something about the dumping prices in MSX Computer magazine (in Dutch):
https://www.msxcomputermagazine.nl/archief/bladen/msx_comput...
At page 5 it is mentioned
https://www.msxcomputermagazine.nl/archief/bladen/msx_comput...
At page 36 and 37 it is mentioned in an article about the Panasonic CF-2700

So timewise it should have happened somewhere at the end of 1985
I couldn't find an article (yet) specifically on this topic.

So to be clear, I meant: same title, no (successive) consistency in the slug (the vowels were removed this time Smile)

I said 'who cares', because there's obviously a funny/frolic twist to this news series, and as the rest of the content is pretty in order, not a biggie I think Smile

But it might be better, if this is to become a ~monthly thing or so, to name it SHRT NWS #2106 next month or so, or #03 (and then you'll get/have your consistent slugs etc Smile)? (Keeping it in 'shrt' spirit Wink)

Otherwise, if you wish to use the title again without a date or edition indicator, you could mention the date, or to what period the content applies and/or the edition in the first sentence; here on the site you'll always see the date of publication, search engine results might not show that (but then will probably show the first sentence(s)).

Though, of course / obviously, using a descriptive (unique) title plus a good (coherent) slug is a good/advisable thing generally Smile

And yeah, thanks for these reports, they're actually pretty relevant! Are these based on news submissions, or gathered from personal findings (as well)? Smile

Cheers!  🍻

Because it was explained in a Spanish podcast, but my knowledge of the Spanish language is very limited. I was just kidding, but regret that now. Bad joke. Sorry for that.

Pentarou: I suggest to submit news posts for it! The MRC staff can of course only posts news that they have found themselves, and news that others have submitted.

These “SHRT NWS” items here were probably submitted by others but summarised here because they did not contain enough details or were not noteworthy enough for a full newspost.

Newsposts have several sources. They either come from a submission by a visitor or are found out about by an admin.

Subjects found by admins might be published whenever an admin feels like publishing it/when the admin feels the article is ready. None of the visitors will ever know how long the post was in the queue, so there's nothing to explain about that really.

The visitor submissions come in several shapes and forms. Some are perfectly written and can be published with some minor alterations. Others are just a link. The perfectly written ones get published rather soon and the less info that comes with it, the longer it takes to be published.
You must know that however there are several admins in the MRC team, not all knowledge is onboard. Some things need research to make a link into a worthy newspost. Writing a newspost about things you don't know about is just waiting for flames.
Then not all admins do handle newsposts for several reasons. The others do their very best to present the news with enthousiasm and a nice picture.

tl;dr: a couple of admins - with family, work, personal reasons, other lack of time, no degree in journalism and often not all needed info handy - have to do it all. They do their utter best.

I know you guys know. You're all smart people and not new here.

What is missing in this short news it was not just I put my dos2 tools online previously on the NWO website. I added some never released tools and added nextor support where relevant and disassembled dosscan.com to make it nextor compatible. So now disk speed can be checked on fat16 partitions.

Writing about a subject may perhaps seem like black magic that only a few lads could ever do, but if you follow certain guide lines and procedures, there's not much to it really. The problem is there's no editor in chief anymore, guarding the whole form factor. Styles are a run-away at the moment. In the days when snout and I did the news, we usually did all the news (with snout being even more fanatic than I was), each with its own news post. No matter how small. That does result in proper attention to each subject - just think of it: there are MSX fans who now get mentioned only in a collection-newspost. It's easier to find things when each subject has its own title. It's easier to hyperlink to. You don't get msd mentioning that things are missing from that one line he got. You get dedicated user reactions. It's way better for Google. You can add a bit o' personal fun to a newspost. Etc. etc.

And yes, I had a rather fucked-up day, that day; but this trend is something I've been eyeballing for a while now, so that's kind of unrelated. It had to be said at some moment, so I did.

To put it mildly: I don't think it's quite fair to criticise the current crew this way. Back in the days of Snout & Wolf_ it also sometimes to ages before a submitted newspost arrived in the news section. And if someone said someting about it, we got the standard "we are all just volunteers/private life/time/etc..."
In the mean time you are now standing at the sideline, more or less judging what the crew is doing now. Easy, to easy... so go hit this button or actually keep the distance you've decided to take.

The Short News was actually one of my ideas. There's just a handful of writers in the MRC team that can actually write with finesse. It's just not every one's cup of tea. Some peeps are better at writing music, some make good images, and others live by coding. Having a small team of writers that have to handle more than enough news to fill a bathtub with, it's frustrating to let some news just go.. unmentioned or unattended. MRC should have some kind of "news flow" window, twitter like short messages. And that is why we came up with this alternative instead.

In all fairness, I never liked the small news posts. Including yours, Wolf. Back in those days I already missed a news ticker kinda thingy. And, I think, the MSX scene has be come more active in the last years with more news than before. But that's an assumption. On the other hand, I did recognize some write quality in your (wolf) news posts. As a writer myself, I know how damn hard it is to make a short, powerful and to the point write up with enough context for every one to understand the subject. Not something for any one to grasp.

I have a standard too, and it takes me some time to do proper investigations, checking resources, getting in contact with owners, writing a well versed intro, verse, chorus and ending. Most of the times about subjects that are new to me. You know, getting a news submission that says "we have a new game ready and it's called xxxxyy". Sometimes not more than that. I love to write about it, I really do, but blank messages like that needs proper focus and free time. Not something I have a bag full of, being married with children and having a full time job.

In other words; I love to discuss how we can handle all input and have keep a good format while keeping every one, including ourselves, happy.

Inspirationally yours, ro.

Years ago, I already came up with news bits, or news tweets, dunno anymore. As a place to show news that didn't have a global appeal (like the announcement of a local MSX meeting somewhere in Argentina). But that was not meant as an alternative method to show regular news with global appeal, mind you. It somehow disappeared after a while.

The problems with the current SHORT NEWS:
- the title SHRT NWS doesn't make much sense in google. If - for my work - I am about to add a Roland synth to the webshop, I'm not calling it a RLND SNTH. You want random people to find an MSX topic, coming from google. You use the most relevant search terms.
- repeating the title SHRT NWS is annoying in the MRC news archive, it should have a kind of date, something that makes it unique
- you're now forced to have alternative URL-names, hence ren's remark about shrt-nws and short-news. How many times can you repeat this alternative spelling before you run into problems, you think?

So, I wasn't out to attack anyone, but this current method just isn't the smart thing to do. And fixing these small things doesn't require any rocket science.

But above all, wait, hold my beer please...

-------------------------------------------------------
Blog article about Maze of Galious

Most MSX fans would agree that Konami's Maze of Galious is among the most respected MSX 1 games ever. And even if you've never really played it, you probably know the music - all good candidates for contemporary remakes. Play the game and you'll be pulling out your hair due to all the puzzles, while being impressed at all the well-drawn boss monsters. This popular platform game got noticed by the blog gamesfromtheblackhole, with Ashley Day making a great article about it. Of course Knightmare gets its fair mentioning as well, just like La Mulana, a game heavily inspired by Maze of Galious. Knightmare, by the way, was subject for a blog article Ashley published as well. So, there you have it; Popolon and Aphrodite in the media!

Relevant link: Games From the Black Hole - Maze of Galious
-------------------------------------------------------
Now, don't tell me this was impossible to do for the current crew. I just made this during my lunch break, and I haven't even read the blog article, merely looking at some of the images. So, it could've been a regular news post, yet it ends up in an uninspired list of links. Exactly this is my criticism. And remember I haven't typed any MSX news in about six or seven years. It's really not rocket science, guys. Just write about the things we know anyway and make it look nice!

Funny, I write stuff like that in my lunch break too Smile
(seriously)

It all boils down to this:
If I had the time and space to write an article of any length about any blog, tweet, video, fart and other nuts that has MSX value, I'd be needing an 8 hour lunch break. I want to, sure, but I just can't.

- Can you ? YES!
- will you? YES!
- have the time? NO!

And there's the dilemma. I would have love to expand on the Black Hole blog, but choose to mention it in the shorts instead.

About your initial rant of URL choosing: 100% agreed on that. A title, name, URL should be somewhat unique.

Now, if you'll excuse me. There's a few news submissions and downloads in the queue that needs my attention...
