The Konami classic Athletic Land is no stranger to us fans of MSX. Just now, a PC remake by M.H.Z. has been released. The game made him love platform games and was the first thing that he played on the MSX around the period of the late '80s/early '90s. This is why he wanted to make a tribute to this game.

And a tribute it is for sure as it's not a plain 1:1 remake; now there is also a backstory involving the search for your little sister and a mysterious cat. Also, apart from a re-arranged soundtrack of the original's, it also features a brand new retro sounding musical score. To top it off, there is a highscore table, items to collect, and yes, for the "Athletic Land" experts among us, you can still opt for playing the game from right to left, just like in the original. You can either play using the keyboard or a controller (the developer recommends an XBOX controller).

The game is totally free to download and took M.H.Z. a whole year to develop, by using his spare time- and evenings. There is a trailer on YouTube if you'd like to check it out a bit for yourself first.

Oh, very cool! Even though I didn't grow up with MSX, I did grow up with this game -- I just knew it as "Cabbage Patch Kids: Adventure in the Park" for the Colecovision! I know there's a Cabbage Patch Kids for MSX as well, which is kind of almost a sequel to this game (with different graphics and music, and the ability to customize your avatar, but otherwise virtually identical gameplay), but the weird thing is, the Colecovision version of Cabbage Patch Kids is NOT the same as the MSX version of Cabbage Patch Kids -- it's actually the same as the MSX version of Athletic Land, but with the main character sprite replaced with a Cabbage Patch Kid girl, and "CHILD PARK" changed to "BABYLAND PARK." All the background graphics, music, and levels of it, however, are identical to MSX Athletic Land.

I always found that kind of odd! It means there are basically three versions of Athletic Land between these two systems: the original, Cabbage Patch Kids for Colecovision (which is kind of like a sprite hack of Athletic Land), and Cabbage Patch Kids for MSX (which is kind of like a straight sequel).

...Either way, I have very fond memories of playing this game as a kid, and now own both Athletic Land and Cabbage Patch Kids for MSX, and it's very nice to see this game get some love anew. It's a really good game for its time -- better than Pitfall, in my opinion!

I like the comparison with "Pitfall", wyrdwad. It's pretty on point. I think it's safe to assume that it greatly inspired "Athletic Land".
By the way, Nerlaska was once working on a sequel which looked very interesting:

There is also "Cabbage Patch Kids 128K" for Colecovision - an unreleased version that looks more like the MSX Cabbage Patch Kids.

Pretty well done. I like the original twist it got.
Good job Smile
