A new version of Bargain has been released. The changelog looks as follows:

  • Drastic increase in speed of VRAM operations
  • Decreased usage of memory in BASIC environment
  • Fixed an issue which occured when switching from SCREEN6 back to the inspection screen
  • Changed behavior of loading PSET-images
  • Fixed an issue with using logical operations on interlaced images
  • Default extensions of interlaced images changed from .IL? to .B1?

Bargain is a lossless compression tool for MSX images in screen mode 5 upto 12. On the Bargain website, you can find the tool itself, the sources and a comparison of Bargain to other compression techniques and formats, such as LZH, GIF or MAG.

What this tool needs is a Win/Linux/Mac compressor. So you can integrate it in your cross-dev build system.

I don't know if anybody has done any testing, but with the few I did bitbuster/pletter still performed better in compression ratio (about 5%). Haven't done any decompression time testing though.
