BITBITJam is an Online RetroGame event where people around the world create a game for old hardware in a week, which was held between Saturday the 14th of June and the 21st of June 2014. The MSX scene was also represented with 3 teams: Demon VideoGames, 8bgames and Panochi Games. The latter came up with the game Operation Brazil World Cup, which became a finalist in the category of best platform use in Bitbit Jam 2014. On YouTube you can find a video recording of Operation Brazil World Cup.

On the Bitbit jam website, the game is described as follows: "You have to control a boy's life in Brasil who gate-crash in the Worldcup to steal the cup that all the planet wants but that so many hardships, corruption and more poverty brings to a country which doesn't raise."

gfx could have been better (screen 5 instead of 4) considering that it requires msx2

@giancomo.zaffini there is a newer version of game and code in this link: https://mega.co.nz/#!bd8wgY5Z!qDmnM5KBRSo6IeTJmJXnxNdLixNckGBQX-p0Saa0eag It's in the description of the video too. It corrects some bugs that remained in the version presented at the jam

@PingPong all the game could have been a lot of better, but lack of time (the completely game had to be made in a week) and knowledge of some things didn't let it ú_ù. I'd never programmed for msx2 and I didn't know how its screens works. The game actually was to be for msx1, but we made that change and used screen 4 to pass the limit of 4 sprites per line and get more color in the sprites. Ah, and Rubén that made all the graphics, he had never made pixelart, nor has never had a msx, nor knew how sprites and tiles worked. He had to learn it all in a few days, and I think he finally made a great job.

I think it’s cool Smile. And very good timing with current affairs for that game, hehe.

Do not misunderstand: the game is great and would deserved a better gfx. unfortunately screen 4 background gfx are not @ the same quality that v9938 can deliver with bitmap modes. sprites are nice and very well designed however.
the next time take a little more time ( if you have ) to study msx2 videomodes, and i'm sure you could made very pretty games!!!

When participating in a fast compo like this, taking more time often isn't really an option. Smile
These things are often a spur-of-the-moment decision to take part in, and as the game has to be created during the actual competition, time is very limited. Smile
Especially if you are working with people who have never worked with a certain platform before, you can't quite expect a polished product. Remember that this has to be fun for the participants too. Smile

@B4rret, do you know if the other MSX games that were announced in this contest were actually released as well?

as b4rret explained, two factors are the key:
- knowledge of the system (take a lot of time to learn / experiment / try / find resources about msx etc)
- the initial target, the msx1 (take time to write decent gfx with the colour clash, also extra time to switch between screen2 -> 4)
if b4rret had a already a good knowledge of msx system, when starting the game, most probably this game employed screen 5.
the limited time restriction to make the game is not the key factor here.

@Fixato I think not ... I did not even see samples of their work on twitter...

@PingPong It was a bit of everything Smile
I have experience with msx1, but not msx2, And the game was to be for msx1. But in the middle of the week, seeing that we wasn't be able to make more than a couple of screens for the game, and it was to be very simple to compete with the others, then we made the change to get more color in the sprites and at least make them more attractive (marketing decision Big smile )... The screen 2 to 4 change actually took no time. They both are very similar and same code worked without changes. But there were other similar changes in the middle and some bugs that appeared that really took time.
And limitation of time is a big key factor... For example, I could spend only 2 or 3 hours a day... And several teams (not only the msx ones) left or had to reduce their games (they said it in twitter) by that. It was talking about extending the deadline on the last day (but finally not).
