Two decades Javier Lavandeira coded a nice Arkanoid clone, completed with some nice Moonblaster 1.4 stereo music and released it for friends only.

On facebook we ran into a newspost of Javier himself who gives a link to the page where it can be downloaded for free. After giving it a run it was instantly clear that this game deserves attention of the whole MSX scene. This is how games were made by two enthousiast hobbyists.

Consider this game as a mandatory download.

Excellent Moonblaster stereo music. Run this DSK in one of the generic MSX2 (or higher) machines of blueMSX, as they come boosted with MSX-MUSIC and MSX-AUDIO.

Remark : a specific MSX-AUDIO rom is not required (contrary to the explanation for openMSX on the official site), only the MSX-AUDIO chip is required !

What explanation do you mean?

The mbstereo extension and the fmpac rom are enough!

Another tip : to avoid that the picture is no more centered, especially in an emulator, remove the SET ADJUST 8,8 instruction on line 40 in the file TITLE2.BAS !

Javi’s got a nice blog as well.

p.s. openMSX also offers such a “Boosted_MSX2_EN” machine.

For the music just choose mbstereo... All will be fine then... Music and Audio are even on their own channel then Wink

Ah, that’s nice, wasn’t aware of such a combi-device.

Wow, thanks for the post, but I feel that qualifying it as a "lost gem" is a bit too much. Other than the music, the game itself isn't THAT interesting. :-)

I wasn't aware of this pseudo-device either! I was booting openMSX while pressing ESC to bypass the Music Module's ROM. :-)

In my opinion it is lost gem... The graphics look MSX made, the music is MSX made, the code must be MSX made without any help of modern tools... All fit well together well enough and on the dutch fairs in the 90s it would have sold easily for € 10,- to €15,-...

It's a really nice gesture you shared it with the rest of the MSX world Smile

I totally agree Meits! I'm glad he released it for the public, how many new games are published nowadays?
It's an oldie, but a goodie! :-)

Sweet! Thanks for releasing this after all these years Smile

@Meits, back in the day we paid in Hfl (Hollandsche Florijn aka gulden), the euro wasn't even conceived yet Wink

I know... We dutchies did the gulden, but I calculated it euro cuz they didn't have gulden anywhere else than here Wink

Yes, I'd like to correct that, but I can't find it anywhere... where exactly did you find this line?

EDIT: Oh, you didn't mean the official openMSX web site, but the official web site of the game Smile Sorry, I misread that!
I did find this in the openMSX manual: http://openmsx.sourceforge.net/manual/user.html#extensions ;-)

MSX made indeed. DD Club for the graphics, HALOS for the fonts, and Moonblaster for the music.

Hi Javi, nice to see you are involved with the MSX again! Maybe you still remember an old Spanish MSX colleague (we studied together in Lenvi Idiomes Wink). Please don't forget to publish the MB-Mania demo as well. I'm sure it's an unknown music demo disk for a lot of people, mainly outside Spain.

MB Mania...
It rang a bell immediately... Maybe I still even have it, but I *did* have an original... I just checked out our former diskmagazine and found a review of it...

Thank you for the game! I found your blog extremely entertaining, particularly the part about Answers In Genesis. I still have to watch the programmes.

Hey Paco! I was under the impression that MoonBlaster Mania had been in Funet/msxarchive.nl for many, many years. However, I can't find it there. The archive I have in my hard drive is somehow corrupted. The songs are there, but the BASIC loader is fucked up.

Do you happen to have it around so I can upload it?

Moonblaster Mania can be found on a Brazilian website. Search in Google for "Cobra Disk Library Preservation Project".

Thanks! I was able to locate it there!

I've posted it on my blog here.

Javi, would you mind uploading both disks to the MRC download database too? If so, I can do it myself. BTW I've restored the .MBK file the Warrior song, so the disk is now perfect. Smile

That's probably never tested and not how it's supposed to be run... you also use DOS2 then... so I'm not surprised it works differently than intended.
