MSXdev'09 - #7 Retaliot

Video Hazard, with Madonna MK 2 on the lead, submitted their game to MSXdev'09. The first MegaROM game of this competition is tightly packed with colourful graphics, smoothly scrolling on your screen, pretending that the MSX1 had scroll registers and hardware parallax scroll. It is none other than Retaliot, the impressive sequel to Seleniak, a space shooter as well.

Amazing scrolling ! Greetings!
Maybe I would have added a small animation for the ship when going up/down.

Actually, I find it a bit too hard. Enemies pass trough the obstacles in teh beckground.
This is very annoing as it makes the player confident of the fact he can pass in certain points, while he cannot.
Another problem is that enemies are not affected by the X movement of the main ship: they look (and are) stick on the screen independently by the scroll direction.
This is critical for gameplay, as the sole way to avoid them is moving up/down

ARTRAG: enemy X movement is relative to the player ship, look closer. Smile

I just played RETALION at 1,7MHz and it is GORGEOUS !!!

The level of difficulty was just too high for me, but at half speed the game is perfect.
Apert for the music in the intro all the rest is excellebt.
All the levels looks symply great
I love the one with piramids and also the crystal cave !!!
Congrats !!!

Hmm, the game doesn't work on my MSX1s, lots of sprite garbage. Crying
This was known by the MSXdev jury already btw, so I'm no whistleblower.

Go code Meisei hap and stop throwing rocks on some others work! Smile
Let Lionel Ritchie in peace! Smile Everyone know that his comments are all flames and shouldn't be take too much serious. Let's laugh a little.
I also found the parallax scroll amazing. Reminds me the first time I saw Shadow of the Beast!!!!

too bad it's not used on a different kind of game, like platform or good-old nemesis like shooter (just one scroll, one direction)
Congratulations for the authors.

Thanks, muffie Smile

Apart from an MSX2 sequel with all the stuff that we could not fit due to time constraints, we'll of course use our parallax techniques on other genres in the future Wink

About the compatibility issues, we simply didn't have time to test the game on the real hardware. We created the game from scratch in just 2 months and, despite I'm very picky in these kind of things, not enough time was left to properly address the compatibility stuff Crying

Stay tuned for more destruction by Erika Seleniak Cool
