Konamiman has published the second Alpha of Nextor, the MSX-DOS 2 compatible operating system. The main changes in this version are:

  • Corrected some serious bugs related to partition management, especially one that prevented the system from booting when a completely blank device (not containing any partition) was attached to a device-based driver.
  • The built-in partitioning tool (CALL FDISK) now works in MSX-DOS 1 mode.
  • The DSKF command now returns the drive free space in KB, not in clusters.
  • Added the CALL MAPDRV command, which allows changing the drive to device and partition mapping from the BASIC prompt. This command works in MSX-DOS 1 mode as well with some restrictions.
  • Added a step-by-step guide to understand the new features of Nextor, including the steps needed for configuring blueMSX (but the guide can be followed in any other emulator or in a real MSX as well).

This project is indeed very promising! I hope it gets to a beta stage soon!

Btw Nestor, I'm not sure if you already have this in mind, but a built-in floppy emulator would be very welcome (like LPE-MMC has). This would achieve a much higher degree of compatibility.

It is one of the planned features. But please be patient, first I want to implement some other nice things.

Sounds indeed intresting.. i hope it would be possible to flash you sunrise CF adapter to use the new bios features so that you can use it easly in your real MSX.
First have to setup this using a emulator.. to give it a try!

Can Nextor 2.0 be burn into a sunrise CF reader ?
Is there some driver to develop?
Can the CF reader support a ROM with a new OS?

Unfortunately it is currently not possible to burn the Nextor kernel in a Sunrise IDE or CF controller, because the IDEFLOAD program assumes that the file to be burned is 64K long and the Nextor kernel is 128K long Sad I have contacted Jon De Schrijder and he told me that he would make a corrected version of the program but I'm still waiting...

Wouldn't it be possible to implement (most of) Nextor into the OCM PLD Pack itself?

Flashing the standalone Nextor kernel in a non-storage flash cartridge allows using it with any other storage controller. Note however that in this case you lose the partition management feature (you need to still manage your partitions the old way, using the controller specific tools) and the built-in FDISK, but you still have features such as the FAT16 support and the drive locking.
