Old New Stock #10: Judgment of Sound

After a bit of a silence here's the tenth edition of Old New Stock. Providing you, dear MSX fans, with yet another blast from the past.

It was so normal for the lucky Dutch, going to a major international MSX fair twice a year together with hundreds of MSX fans filling up a complete sports hall in either Tilburg or Zandvoort. Saturday September 18th 1993 was like that, too. At the end of the rail track hop off the train, walk a few hundred meters through the dunes to arrive in the Pellikaanhal to spend all the money you were able to save just on MSX goodies. And there was enough of that.

The post Zandvoort edition of MSX Computer & Club Magazine reviewed no less than nineteen music disks. Admitted, they had a bit of catching up to do, but this illustrates that music disks were booming.

The back then music disk veterans-to-be of Compjoetania had spent their precious free time on making their third music disk as a sequel to the six months older Noise Disk. Like most groups they supported the Moonblaster stereo format, which means that the listener has to connect the MSX-Audio to the left speaker and the MSX-Music to the right speaker (or the other way around) to enjoy the maximum effect.

"Now what did they release?", you might ask. Well, that's what this tenth Old New Stock edition is all about. Judgment of Sound. Presented in a very original way. The scales of Lady Justice in perfect balance if both Music Chips are present, and an end demo in which the makers get to hear whether or not they're guilty.

After just over 25 years this disk still deserves to be played and not be forgotten. We're happy that Bart Roymans agreed with us to put Judgment of Sound in the spotlights again and make it available for download in MRC's ever growing download database. So, don't be shy and get these fine notes.

Before you press the download button, here are some keys for some additional functions:

  • DEL - Toggle frequency
  • INS - Toggle VU-Meter/Position and step counter on/off
  • SELECT - Change music chip
  • ESC - Leave replayer
  • HOME - Autoplay (only when no music is playing)
  • STOP - Stop autoplay

Reading the text, I can’t help but wonder if the scales in the player would tilt one way or the other if you have just one music expansion plugged in? I never checked...

Never realised that the first edition of MCCM I wrote for was the post-zandvoort 93 edition. And indeed, it was a lot of catching up.
