Pengo officially released

The MSX2 remake of arcade blockbuster Pengo, under development by Spanish software producer Paxanga Soft has left the factory and was launched at the 37th edition of the RU (Reunión de Usuarios) meeting in Barcelona. Those who bought it at said event were rewarded with an exclusive audio CD.

Still, the Pengo ROM itself has plenty of bonuses to offer for the happy buyer; among them are extra features like a sound test but also bonus games such as MSXdev'09's entry Cow Abductors.

PassionMSX only allow *ORIGINAL* games. Not clones of famous games ...

Are you telling they have ripped off code, graphic or music from the original arcade or from some other pengo port?
Question

This is the sole "originality clause" in that competition

God, nooooo.. AFAIK, Juan Luis coded from scratch and manually re-drew all GFX.
Me myself, I reproduced all music and SFX from zero using Vortex Tracker II and AY Sound FX Editor.

Well, if they allow ports of arcade games it is their business ... But the rules are weird, like when they do not wanted re-compilation or direct use of graphics and music from games. Not sure about games that are not licensed either ...

Now, are you sure that the game do not use direct music or graphics from the arcade? The title is the same and some tiles are similar "enough".

If you take the time, you can reproduce anything.

I coded everything (except pt3 player itself, and bitbuster). GFX were converted taking the arcade ones, ones easier, others more tricky (SC2/SC4 limits fight...). And Demonseed had to find lot of patience to deal with my music requests and changes Big smile

Hehe, was referring to the sound in general. Big smile
So GFX were actually converted and adapted?

Yep, some gfx automatically (most), some manually (a couple). Why to work in vain? Tongue Better save time to code, that was a long enought part. That, and figuring how maze creation, deleting and so on works. Take lot of video captures from Mame, watch them at slow motion to count frames, take note of enemy colour on each round, position where they appear, order, blah blah... If i didn't have to make it look like arcade one, it would be WAY easier... But then, not so much fun! When i realized that less than 16 bytes were enought to make ANY combination on maze, i was happy! Big smile

Wouldn't it be better to submit a newspost for this in stead of bumping a 2 year old topic? Just saying...

Having said that, there will be a newspost/spotlight on this later today to give it the attention it deserves.

The news was known to mrc for over a day, I assumed the crew was lazy/busy to write a post yet, so I put a link here. Nishi

Hap was member of the team, but I guess he was too busy with other activities, so he's decided to act again like a free man ! ;)

That's ok =p I'll take it as a compliment from JH. I'm glad Jorito posted the news quickly after all.
*edit* and no, I won't join. Thinking back, I really enjoyed being on the team when wolf_ was the acting maintainer of the site (snout was not active). But when snout took over again, it felt to me like the atmosphere gradually changed from colleague-colleague to an uncomfortable employee-employer.

Not sure what I find worse from a MRC reader view: Bumping a 2 year old thread to news, or bumping a 2 year old thread with news.

:P ;)

With all due respect, that's a weird notion to me. In my experience, snout never acted like an "employer" within the team. It's wolf_ who's actually more strict (not saying that's a bad thing). It's probably in the eyes of the beholder. Anyway, I can't digress on this but maybe you should know that multiple persons within the MRC team are dealing with serious personal stuff as we speak. This can indeed interfere with maintaining the contents of a hobby site but hasn't got much to do with (perceived) "laziness".

I understand. The reason I posted this in the first place was for the community, letting them know of a new game. It was not for making you guys feel under pressure for posting this news.
me&wolf being more compatible than me&snout doesn't go for everyone of course.

I see. Guess it's about compatibility of characters, indeed. Ofcourse news should be posted as soon as possible, but IMHO a day of delay should be forgiveable. Wink If you'd wanna consider rejoining, it wouldn't be a bad thing if you ask me, but that's your choice.
