R-Type Improvement Addition

Irem's R-Type, a fine shooter regarded by some MSXers as a cheap Gradius ripoff, originally only sang MSX-MUSIC if it detected an FM-PAC cartridge. A fix for this peculiarity is already floating around on the internet, though not without its bugs.

Today, BiFi (not active on our forum anymore), released an additional ROM image that's able to make R-Type detect MSX-MUSIC. It also allows the user to boot with PSG or MSX-MUSIC, and MSX1 or MSX2 graphics via a menu. Like FIXBOOT, it can be obtained from BiFi's website, in the Downloads section, under Bugfixes.

"A cheap Gradius ripoff"? I wouldn't say so. Especially some sequels like R-Type Delta are very good.

Ivan: that one's converted to disk, right? Maybe BiFi didn't know about this one.
KdL: the MSX1/2 difference is not very clear until level 2
konamiman: according to wolf Tongue

I think R-type is a good game, overall. It can't be compared to Nemesis series because they have gaming differences. For this reason I think is good having a R-type version on MSX. It could be a better conversion, certainly. I have tested it using Turbo-R R800 mode, and game speeds-up a little. Is a good experience playing the game on these conditions, someone has completed the game playing?

Martos made a good job passing the game to disk, allowing to work on 128 kb RAM MSXs (loading from disk the following stage). But unfortunately the game soffers stops, I guess due to RAM page changes and/or BIOS calls. Those stops and little screen glitches appears even on a Turbo R , R800 mode.

I have a R-type ROM version using ASCII 16k mapping or Konami SCC (done by me). Also I have done a RAM charger (from disk) for Bifi's Rtype improvement ROM, allowing to put the MSX on desired state (R800 mode for example) before loading the game. Someone want it? Send me a message. It will be 10000 (it's a joke).
