The SMW project has undergone a lot of bugfixes and other corrections since its showcase at the Nijmegen MSX fair, so it's time to share the latest version with the community.

Controls:

X: select, jump
Z: spinjump
C: run, pick up objects, other actions
V: drop powerreserve

[ESC]: open options menu. Only works on worldmap or in game
P: pause game, unpause game

1: skip level
2 tm 0: defunct cheat controls. Expect engine crash using any of these!

Been playing this game for several hour, it's addictive and looks damn great, might even hook up my SNES tomorrow and play SMW on it again.
Hint: don't grab the feather! The game will freeze!

What is your setup? what kind of computer etc etc etc. it doesn't freeze over here so I am wondering whats the difference.

EDIT: WOW it freezes wtf!! This didn't happen a few weeks ago. Ill fix it asap.

Can you perhaps explain a bit what all keys are doing on the keyboard? The number keys seem to have a funky effect....

And you spoke about a settings menu. How to open it?

I had to check several times if it was actually my MSX running this software and there wasn't a SNES hiding behind my desk all of a sudden. Holy cow, this stuff is epic. A masterpiece already, if you ask me.

You spotted a major bug it seems. Can you reproduce the brown block bug?

Hmmz wierd. We had to change alot in that map. We cannot get even close to the original due to HW limits. But the map is doable. I can win that map with a no death play in less than a minute Wink Its MSX everything is harder on MSX Tongue

OK, I just started the game again, and just after loading my savegame (13!), I get the "GAME OVER' screen Sad Progress lost?

Just after starting? not having those problems here on the turbo. You are trying this in openmsx?

EDIT: perhaps some older version of the rom was loaded in your turbo-R once. In that case you may need to clear your SRAM.

Its different than hell Tongue It's pure terror. You always think you got all the bugs ironed out and as soon as post the rom online bug reports start flowing in from everywhere. And sometimes you see something happen in the corner of your screen and you are never able to reproduce it ever again. That moment when the engine just crashes because it doesn't like you pfffff. I already know that the engine will have glitches just like the snes version I accept that I will not be able to fix em all.

Daemos: I started the same ROM every time (the latest one). i just quit at some point (openMSX) and then a few hours later started it again, loaded the game and I Immediately get game over. I can send you the SRAM file if you like.

Do you know if it's possible to flash the rom in the Megaflashrom SCC+, the previous non-sd version? It happens the same it happened with (will be the game finished finally as SF respecting the original good title screen and menus?) Pointess Fighting which only worked with Megaflashrom SCC+ SD.

The previous megaflashrom has a maximum of 1024 kB So it is just too small for this game to get successfully flashed in. Sorry.

regarding the properly finished question: No we are not going for the semi-finish. We keep ourselves as close to the original as possible within the limits of the MSX HW. Usually the differences are enemies at slightly different positions. Some parts of the map left out (has not yet happened) and a different intro menu as you have allready noticed. I am allready amazed myself how close we are getting to the original. Our version is alot more difficult though. The controls and gameplay are slightly different and thats just because I find it more playable that way. The dificulty is compensation for every enemy we had to leave out and because its MSX Smile

besides. the whole thing is open source. So things can be changed.

Oh, about finish, it was just a open question about "Pointless Fighting" Smile , your great on SMW is outstanding, and even you finish the game with less levels that the huge original game... I'm going to buy it if you release it on cart. Everything is impressive. Yesterday I tested it using BlueMSX and I was amazed. For sure, it's so so great Smile

Ohw yes i also like to add that there is a alternative keymapping which can be selected from the options menu. Just change the keyboard logo into the red one and I am not sure anymore which keys do what after that Tongue

It was something like ctrl to jump
grph to hold

try it out.

The awnser is: It's complicated Tongue

The game will be a free rom download and the source will be a public depository. However, we imagine that there is interest in a cartridge format for this game. As the developers we have interest in a cartridge format for some reasons as well:

1. Not everyone owns a megaflashrom SCC+ SD
2. Some people want a cartridge for their collection
3. There are possibilities to include SRAM or FlashROM inside the cartridge for saving functions.

The cartridges will be produced on a non profit basis. this means that in the end we will first inquire interest then contact a cartridge maker. Then present you all the offer of final prize and finally produce the batch and distribute.

Please note that the cartridge will not affect our open policy in any way. Source code remains where it is (public and open source) and the latest rom remains as a free download. The cartridge is a extra thing for those who likes to have it that way.

But lets not rush. We are still having a long way ahead. Wink

Due to the size, you will need to implement an ad hoc mapper with a custom scc chip
If you are going to use a custom scc chip you will not incur in the glitches on the 4th channel that affects the original chip
This means that one can rise the sampling frequency to 7,6Kh or even to 9,6Kh if you emulate an scc+
