About a year ago, software house Kai Magazine announced the development of a new MSX2 RPG-action game called The Sorrow of Gadhlan'Thur. This week the company stated that development is finished and the game will be released shortly. It will be available on cartridge and, as a surprise, it comes with SCC hardware built in.

The game supports PSG and SCC musics using an external SCC cartridge. Toggle between SCC or PSG by holding down a key during startup. The earlier mentioned support for MSX-Music (FM-PAC and alike) was dropped in favor of SCC. According to Kai Magazine the raw sounding SCC fits better with the game. The best news is that the cartridges sold during pre-ordering can be fitted with an SCC chip for just a few dollars more. This limited special edition with integrated SCC will only be done once and is exclusive for those who made the pre-purchase, Clint won't mind.

If you haven't pre-ordered, here's another oppertunity. There's a chance for another batch of 25 cartridges to be sold, but it's without a built-in SCC unfortunately. The game on cartridge costs 42 euros + shipping. Check out this forum topic for more information about that.

I must make a correction and clarify this so people don't have false hopes:
"If you haven't pre-ordered, here's another oppertunity. There's a chance for another batch of 25 cartridges to be sold, and perhaps even with SCC build in."

No, those 25 available cartridges don't have SCC built in.
The SCC built in batch is for those who made the pre-puchase only.
There will be no more SCC built in batches, I can 100% assure you that.

I know, but making the SCC batch exclusive for pre-purchasers is a way to thank them for their support and for the long, long wait they had to endure.
It would be very unfair to destroy that exclusivity by making a new batch in the fututre, so we can't do that.

Anyway, if the SCC cartridge manufacturer manages to create a new batch, we will make a new SCC exclusive game. A nemesis/gradius kind of game would be cool with scc, yes?

And kudos for you again for another beautiful work on the announcement pictures, hamlet. You'll probably like to know that Wakachan told me he was very impressed with the composition you made to announce the MSX Pixel Art and Chiptune Preservation projects, as he saw that one of his images was there. He had been visiting as a ghost reader of MRC since then.

Another excellent game from Kai Magazine.

Waiting for more video footage (and the game itself) of El Secreto de los Cuatro Vientos:

According to Kai Magazine the game will be huge (a lot more screens than Solid Snake or SD Snatcher).

Dear Kai,

I've been far from MSX games for ages now, and I have to say I'm really impressed to discover such a fine game made in 2019 for it! Congrats! By the way, have you ever thought of porting it to, for example, Nintendo Switch? This console has strong retro game appeal, and it could give to your game a broader audience.

Cheers,

Alex

Hi Alex,
Thank you very much for your kind words!
Just in case you didn't know, we made a whole bunch of games for MSX 2 over the years.
Please take a look here:

Kai Magazine Store

Porting to Swith is difficult since you need a reliable and powerful publisher, and our games are for a niche market.
Anyway if the oportunity arises, we will sure do!
We made a remake of one of our games for PC/Steam "Life on Mars Remake", feel free to look it up if you wish.

Thank you for your suggestions ;)

Hi Ivan,
Thank you for your interest on "The Secret of the Four Winds" project :)
There is plenty more footage and the game is far more advanced than what you can see on those videos, but for now we don't want to tease the public since the release of that game is still a bit far.

Kind regards:

The betatesting is over! (I belive/hope)
The betatesting has been REALLY complicated for this game.
Belive me, it's not the same to betatest an arcade game or to betatest a 10 hours long action RPG...
We have been working for 2 weeks non-stop.
If nothing new arises, tomorrow we will start sending the digital versions to those who ordered them (yes, I forgot to mention here that there is a digital version for 12 euro ^_^! ) and shipments will start in a few days.

Hi Gloriou,
Is it a Carnivore 2?
To flash the game with Carnivore 2 you must download a particular config file from the manufacturer’s page (a file which starts with dsk2rom) and use the c2man to edit the rom’s entrance in order to force this config to be loaded when that rom is executed.
Please refer to the Carnivore2 user's manual to see how to do this exactly, since this involves several steps which are difficult to explain for me.

Hi Hashem,
If the desert is still very hard for your character, try exploring other areas and picking up secret items which are not necessary in order to finish the game but will help a lot on combat-oriented areas such as the desert of the damned.
Take a look at the manual and look at the items/relics you can find.
The magical sword +3 and the defense ring will sure help a lot in the desert.
Carrying 60 knives or more will help too against those bloddy flying ghosts Wink

I like your chances!
Please also consider that there is a big factor of skill, strategy and technique involved in the combat areas.
Try to evade as many enemies as you can, and eliminate the most uncontrollable ones as soon as possible.
You can enter an screen, take a quick peek at it, see where the enemies are located, exit the screen, mentally plan your moves, kill an enemy exit the screen, hit an enemy, exit the screen (enemy hp is not reseted by exiting the screen) so you can use a hugue amount of techniques and tricks, together with the character's skills in order to advance a difficult area.

My cartridge arrived yesterday, thank you very much Oscar for this game.
It is the most addictive action RPG I played and doesn't have to hide behind previous titles. The graphics are absolute fantastic, the gameplay is smooth, the music is outstanding. What a sound, SCC at its best. I have to stop writing and go back to Gadhlan'Thur.

Thank you very much for your kind words about the game, Hamlet!
Regarding the game-play, I must thank all the beta-testers who have played it over and over and not only helped me solve bugs but also to polish and balance the gameplay with their expertise.
Regarding the music, all the credit is for John Hassink and Manuel Dopico.
I want to apologize to them because they had to suffer through my high demands and I squeezed them until I got what I wanted exactly.
I am very happy that this game is being liked so much for those who have played it. That really cheers me up!

I'm really enjoying it too! But I'm surprised to see people mentioning having the Magical Sword +3 already -- I have all 5 keys and every other item in the manual, and thought I was being really thorough, but STILL haven't found the Magical Sword +3. I thought maybe it was hidden in the Desert of the Damned or the Statue of Gadhlan' Thur, so I've been trying to slowly work my way through both places, but to no avail: the green ghosts in particular always kick my ass!

Can anyone give a hint on where the Magical Sword +3 is found? Is it in the Desert of the Damned or Statue of Gadhlan' Thur, or is it in one of the other areas? I'm guessing by what you've said that it's in one of the other areas, but I can't imagine where -- I've looked EVERYWHERE!! May have to do a bit more digging...

Ooh, never mind! I decided to retrace my steps, and finally found it -- along with a very KAI-style secret item that's not listed in the manual! Sneaky, sneaky! Wink

This game is really awesome, though, to be sure. Great job as always, man! I'll have to concur with Hashem that this is your best game to date -- it reminds me a lot of the indie Windows game "Alwa's Awakening," which is a compliment I don't make lightly (as I absolutely adore that game!).

One day, I'd like to, when I upgrade my MSX. And I anticipate I'll like it, but I don't think I'll like it more than Gadhlan' Thur, if only because the style of game is less appealing to me -- I've never been a huge fan of the Shinobi games, so the gameplay in Life On Earth doesn't appeal to me as much. It's too linear. Wink

I hope you are progressing with El Secreto de los Cuatro Vientos, you told me that the game will be huge. It looks amazing with those graphics in screen 8 and 256 colours, visually it reminds me as if it were a game for SNES. Keep up the good work!

Hi Ivan,
I will not be attending to Badalona meetings anymore (way too much piracy) and I am not sure I will attend to the next Barcelona meeting either (I didn't attend the last one). Seing how people sell games that aren't theirs and that they earn more money than a developer who spent hundreds or thousands of hours working on a new game is not something that I wish to see in person anymore, and every time there are more and more users and groups doing that.
So if you wish to get the game I suggest you hurry up, only 8 units left from the second batch and I have no idea if we will make more or when.

El Secreto de los Cuatro Vientos is progressing when I have some spare time. The project is very big and it will take a long time to finish, but it will be finished.

Thank you for your enthusiasm!

@Kai, I am surprised about your statement about piracy, didn't know that nowadays there were people at those meetings with recent MSX software pirated. Do not worry, in my humble opinion the vast majority of MSX users are not interested in such software. For me blank floppy disks (and tapes) with pirated MSX software copied onto them worth absolutely nothing (what an anachronism!). My idea was to save some shipping costs, I will get the original game on cartridge by any mean! Smile

http://www.msxblog.es/video-y-fotos-encuentro-de-usuarios-de...

Also, some people in Badalona has tested and bought most of KAI Magazine's games. Many or all of them! And I don't understand why you say all this lies of Badalona or Barcelona meetings (although I have some idea...).

It is known the support of both Badalona and Barcelona Meetings to homebrew games and software and the continuous fight of the Badalona MSX Boixos against the piracy of homebrew software in general and KAI Magazine's in particular.

So people should buy ONLY homebrew games wether they like it or not and CAN'T do cartridges compilations of old 80s games or similar stuff of ROMs they already have in their hard drive?

This is a HOBBY! Sometimes is an expensive hobby (like others) but noone is harming Konami or Compile or Opera Soft or....any company that is not publishing again their games of the 80s! Or should we ban the 2nd hand game selling?

I'm sorry but I don't understand.

Dear warmize,
To create and sell illegal reproductions of software without the owner's consent, for a profit is, by definition, piracy, so I am not a liar nor I am lying.
I know many people in the MSX spanish community don't consider that to be piracy, but the police detaining people selling illegal reproductions of movies in bars and beaches would disagree.
I am not saying this for you in particular, or for all the spanish community, but when a community (a local community for example) considers someone a bad person because he is against piracy, perhaps it is time to see if there is something wrong with that community's ideology. Since the community will not do it to itself and there is no way to change it, my only choice is to remove myself from that community.
Is that fair enough?

Do you have the rights or permisions to develop and sell tribute games that look like others that were or are commercial?
Do you have permission of Sega to sell "Thio's Odissey - A Wonder Boy clone" for Intellivision? And your particular "Road Fighter"? Or the games you were told you ripped graphics (I heard about it, I don't care)?
It's been years that compilations have been sold by many people from the scene and suddenly you have a problem? Only with these people? With "some" people?
I don't think that personal problems you may have with some people have to of the public interest.
This thread should be to talk about your excellent game, but you mixed it with other stuff.
This is my last post about this issue.

I always had a problem with illegal reproductions when they are made for a profit, and I stated it the same way as in this case. I have, for example, nothing against the AAMSX compilations because those are not sold for profit, but just to fund the Barcelona Meetings and keep that event free for all visitors, nor other compilations that have been made with no personal gain.
The thing is that over the last 2 years or less (not suddenly) more and more people making reproductions for profit have been appearing and there are more and more of them every time, to the point where I and others have been having difficulties to find flash cartridges for over one year now, and we must see how many people support those reproductions while they don't support some homebrew, (for example, the sorrow of gadhlan thur, 20 preorders only).
The lack of cartridges and support forced me to look for support elsewhere, while I had to see how people are earning more money than a homebrew developer by selling games that aren't theirs, and having more support from the scene than someone who has been working for hundreds or thousands of hours in a new game.
I understand that all this is something that is difficult to empathize with if you never lived or felt something like this before, so I don't expect many people to empathize, but suffice to say that I don't wish to see it and I don't want to be a part of this.

Thio's odyssey was a test, something to show to the intellivision scene and to grasp their attention.
It was never published with those graphics, premise or playability.
The game was re-made and redesigned before it was published with another name.

As for making clones that look similar to other games, that is part of the game industry (every game made nowadays is the clone of a clone of a clone) and that does not erase the thousands of hours a developer puts into that game.

Regarding me saying such things in public, I don't see the need to lie, here or anywhere, or to anyone, about the reason I will stop attending MSX meetings or why the MSX is now just a hobby for me.
I belive I should not be the one ashamed of it.

As for why I mentioned those 2 places only, it is because those are the 2 meetings where I am expected to assist by the person who asked. I am not targeting anyone in particular.

That's a new issue!

In Badalona meetings sell or buy anything is forbidden. There is no "shop of pirate or replica games" as it might seem to someone who read your comments. And you know it. And that is the problem of your comments.

So...you had problems of stock of cartridges? And it's not your first time as far as I know.
Did you plan properly the launch of your last productions? Or you thought you would need some amount of cartridges at some date and then cancelled the buy because it was not ready? Or something else you are not saying?
You have not been the only one in having cartridges stock problems. And you know it.
Please, don't mix your cash flow or publish planning problems with the thinks you may like or dislike.

-In Badalona meetings sell or buy anything is forbidden
-Nontheless it still happens, and you know it, and that is the problem and the reason of my comments.

-Did you plan properly the launch of your last productions?
-Yes, responsibly, just asking what I needed or was preordered at the moment.

-So...you had problems of stock of cartridges? And it's not your first time as far as I know.
-No, it is not the first time, and it is worse every time, not just for me.

-Or you thought you would need some amount of cartridges at some date and then cancelled the buy because it was not ready? Or something else you are not saying?
-That never happened, I don't owe anything to any cartridge manufacturer, I never ordered more than I needed or what it was paid for in advance by the costumers, and I never said "save me this amount of cartridges just in case I need them" or anything like that. I know some people did that, but I never did and I have written proof of that. Please don't trust the rumors (lies) other people spread. They have a reason to lie (to get rid of their part of the responsability/blame and make it look like it's all my fault), I don't have any reason.
My cartridge providers have been:
-Rafa Bollero for the 2048Kb flash cartridges
-Manuel pazos (for SCC cartridges).
-Jose Angel Velasco (for sd cartridges)

I have bought and paid every single amount I have asked, and I never cancelled any amount I have ordered, nor I have said: "please save xxx cartridges for me in case I need them"
I know Brunilda and Ghouls and Ghosts managed to get hold of a certain amount of cartridges without any kind of advance payment for as long as they needed, but I never used that kind of favor, nor I knew that was possible, that is why there are SCC cartridges for Brunilda and Ghouls and Ghosts, but there are not for "The sorrow of Gadhlan Thur".

-You have not been the only one in having cartridges stock problems. And you know it.
-That is exactly what I posted here previously. It's not something just related to me nor I am the only one affected by it. Others are suffering the same consequencies. It's a serious problem.

-Please, don't mix your cash flow or publish planning problems with the thinks you may like or dislike.
-I don't. My inhability to adquiere cartridges is not related to cash flow problems, since I only order what buyers have already paid (and I always try to have a reserve of 10 or 15 cartridges at all times for the online shop), but as you said yourself I am not the only one having issues when looking for cartridges. That is not a cash issue.

Jordi, feel free to belive any one sided version you might have heard if that is what you need or that gives you a good trip, but there are always at least 2 versions of every story.
You never bothered to ask me my version of all this and now you are spreading rumors and lies that you convinced yourself to be the truth because you enjoy it more than the actual truth might be or for whatever reason beyond my understanding.
Everything I said here (because you guys brought it up) are just facts which I can prove beyond any shadow of doubt, and I can prove them to you any time you like, if you have the slightest interest in the facts.

The last week we have a meeting: I brought a ROM of a game I am developing to test it in different hardware, I got my Flashjacks updated and also I got an update of "Venganza". Also, we tested some games that were under developement (as we did with your games when you came) and talked a lot. We could also play "Los amores de Brunilda" and "The sorrow of Ghaldanthur"! And that was a normal meeting for me.
It seems that every single person that attends to these meetings buy dozens or hundreds of cartridges!!! You put everyone that attends the meetings, or at least the organisers, in the same box. And it's not true.About your version...you are already giving it to me and the others. I just asked why you needed to say that rubbish.
You have decided what can be saved or played in cartridges manufactured by others because other guys also buy cartridges to save some ROMs they already have and play in their PC!!!!
And that is the only problem if you read your messages carefully.

Perhaps this time, but I wasn't there to see it, was I?
But I was there in all other ocasions, and I saw what I saw, and I am not the only one.

It looks like when you read you understand what you wish to understand.
Please you read my messages carefully again:
I previously said "some individuals", not everyone. I also said: not the organizers.
At 25-09-2019, 11:10 I wrote:
"I am not acusing the organizers or everyone, but the fact that is there are individuals commiting piracy in those events and I don't want to see it. Is that fair enough?"

I haven't decided what other people can or can't do. What I said over and over is:
I don't want to see it nor to be a part of it.

I don't need to say anything, I just replied to the questions I have been asked in the most truthful manner possible. I have nothing to hide. Do you?

One thing is what I might say, which people can choose to belive or not. Another thing is what I can proove, which noone can choose not to belive, but few are interested in.

By the way, just a reminder:
My post regarding this was from a month ago aprox. and it caused no fuzz whatsoever.
I haven't written about this ever since and just because I was asked, and I have been disconnected from the spanish scene for many, many months now.
All this is just you. You are the one calling me a liar, asking questions, spreading rumors and lies and making me give explanations.
Do you expect me to lie?
Am I the one creating this flame?
I am literally just replying to your questions, rumors and lies.
It's all on you.

For allusions.

Not only have I sold you SD cartridges. I have also sold you 2MB cartridges.

Stock problems?
There was only once a problem of stock of cartridges, during a Christmas, because it took longer than normal to reach the materials. Cartridge manufacturers, we are not big companies, so we cannot have huge stocks, waiting for developers to say how many cartridges they want for next week. When someone has asked me for cartridges with enough time, he has had them. In any case, I usually have a stock of between 20-40 cartridges for immediate delivery, and on request, those that are needed.
Cartridges sold for compilations are a minority compared to those sold for new games. And the compilations have not affected the sale of other new games. If you haven't had enough sales of your new game, the problem is another.
Who wants cartridges, buys them. What they do next with them is not my problem.

I told you from the first day, you would be my SD provider, Rafa Bollero would continue to be my Flash cartridge provider, and if he ever was out of stock and I needed cartridges urgently, I would contact you. I said that to you in fromt of a bunch of people and via whatsapp.
I did a few times and I bought all the ones you had in stock in that moment.
When I asked you when you could have more, you always replied "in several months" (short version).
The last time you told me "I can make 10 boards a week for all my costumers".
That's all. You have nothing to do with it. You never did.

Before the reproduction boom started, I or anyone never had issues getting cartridges inmediatelly.
From 1 year ago, not only me, there are difficulties to get cartridges.
Those are the facts.

This is the reason why new cartridge manufacturers have appeared in Spain over the last month.

I think "Esto parece Salvame" is idiomatic and means something like "Oh My God" (Salvame -> Saviour) Wink

Oh man! How dare you to question my great research and findings? Duh!
(just kidding)

I should probably google something first instead of thinking out loud. If you google that word, there's a whole bunch links about that show, lol

Thank you for your email, I am very happy that you liked the game Smile
Yes, there is a good chance that eventually, in my spare time, I make a second part of this game.
Yes, probably for V9990 and OPL4. Now that there will be so many MSXVR users, the v9990+opl4 users pool will increase even more.
